Former Vice Chairman of the Tibet Autonomous Region Government, Wang Yong, has been sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, after being accused of accepting bribes exceeding 2.71 billion yuan. Wang Yong was investigated while in office in January last year, less than three years after assuming the position of government vice chairman.
On July 8th, the Intermediate People’s Court of Chenzhou City, Hunan Province, publicly pronounced the verdict in the case of Wang Yong, former member of the party committee and vice chairman of the Tibet Autonomous Region Government, for bribery. Wang Yong was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, deprived of political rights for life, and had all personal properties confiscated.
The court stated that from 2007 to 2023, Wang Yong took advantage of his positions as Director of the Policy and Regulations Department of the Civil Aviation Southwest Regional Administration, Director of the Civil Aviation Guizhou Safety Supervision Bureau, Chairman of Guizhou Airport Group Co., Ltd., and also concurrently served as the Commander of the Guizhou Longdongbao International Airport Phase III Expansion Project Command, using the conveniences provided by his authority and status to help relevant units and individuals secure project contracts, and accepted a total of more than 2.71 billion yuan in cash and gifts.
In January 2024, Wang Yong was investigated during his tenure, less than three years after assuming the position of government vice chairman; in July of the same year, he was expelled from the party and public office, and transferred to judicial authorities; in February of this year, the prosecution initiated the public trial, which took place on May 5th.
Public records show that Wang Yong was born in March 1971 in Luzhou, Sichuan Province. He worked in the civil aviation system in his early years. In 2015, he became the Vice General Manager of Guizhou Airport Group and the following year assumed the position of Chairman. In 2019, he transferred to the Director of the Guizhou State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission, and in April 2021, he relocated to Tibet as the vice chairman, being promoted to the deputy ministerial level.
