Breaking News: French President Macron Addresses Nation After Prime Minister Resigns

French Prime Minister Barnier handed in his resignation, prompting President Macron to deliver a speech at the Elysee Palace on Thursday, December 5, announcing his commitment to completing his five-year presidential term until 2027. He vowed to appoint a new prime minister in the coming days.

Macron stated that the new prime minister’s primary task would be to form a new government and pass the budget bill. In early next year, the new government will draft a new budget legislation, with the government needing to pass the new budget early next year to carry out necessary investments. Public services in France will continue to operate.

On Wednesday, December 4, the French National Assembly conducted a historic vote of no confidence against the government, which led to the collapse of the minority government led by Barnier after only three months in office. Prime Minister Barnier submitted his resignation to Macron on Thursday.

Against the backdrop of soaring fiscal deficits and economic pressures in France, this unprecedented political crisis has further complicated an already tense social situation. All eyes are now on President Macron.

Due to not having a majority in parliament, Macron’s domestic power has been weakened, but he still holds some broad authority in foreign policy, European affairs, and defense, being responsible for negotiating and approving international treaties. The president also serves as the commander-in-chief of the armed forces and holds the nuclear launch codes.

Macron was first elected in 2017 and re-elected in 2022, serving a five-year term.
