New York welcomed the coldest weather since the beginning of winter this week.

The meteorological bureau has warned that New York City will experience an unusually cold weather this week. Multiple cold fronts are expected to pass through consecutively, causing a sudden drop in temperatures. The wind chill could bring the perceived temperature down to below freezing, potentially as low as minus 17 to 18 degrees Celsius, making it the coldest days of the winter so far. The city government is urging the public to stay vigilant and prepare for the cold.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in the United States has announced that several cold fronts will sweep across the New York area this week.

On Tuesday, daytime temperatures will not exceed 30 degrees Fahrenheit (around minus 1 to 2 degrees Celsius). However, due to the wind chill effect, the actual feeling could be in the single digits to teens temperature range. As a high-pressure system moves in, temperatures are expected to drop further on Tuesday night.

Midweek, temperatures are forecasted to “relatively rise.” It is projected that on Wednesday, the high temperature could reach over 30 degrees Fahrenheit, and by Thursday, it may rise to the low 40s. Nevertheless, meteorologists also warn that on Thursday, there could be a mix of rain and snow precipitation, and cold fronts are expected to strike again on Thursday and Friday nights, potentially bringing back cold weather for the weekend.

In response to the severe cold weather, the New York City Emergency Management Department has issued a cold wave warning, urging residents to pay attention to their own safety and that of their surrounding family and friends, especially the elderly and vulnerable groups.

The city government issued a warning that the risks brought by this wave of low temperatures could even be life-threatening if individuals lack appropriate winter clothing, outdoor warm gear, or if indoor heating is unstable. Authorities advise people to minimize outdoor activities, wear proper clothing when going outside, and not leave skin exposed. If there are issues with heating or hot water that cannot be resolved with the landlord, individuals can call 311 for assistance.

Additionally, the city government has strengthened outreach efforts to assist the homeless population by providing temporary shelters and safe havens to ensure that no one freezes or suffers frostbite during this cold snap.
