On Saturday, officials in the Karur region of Tamil Nadu, India, reported a tragic accident at a campaign rally held by the film star Vijay, resulting in the death of at least 31 people and injuries to over 50 others.
According to Senior Police Officer V. Selvaraj, “A total of 31 people have died, with over 50 others receiving treatment in hospitals.”
The rally attracted a large number of people, with actor Vijay’s political party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, conducting a statewide campaign tour.
Vijay, a well-known actor in Tamil cinema, renowned by his single name, is considered one of the most commercially successful actors in South India and is often referred to as the “Superstar of Tamil Cinema.” Last year, he founded the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam party and began campaigning this month in preparation for the state elections scheduled for early next year.
Member of Parliament Senthil Balaji told the media that the accident was a result of a stampede at the rally site, with 58 people currently hospitalized. He added that Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.K. Stalin, will visit the area before Sunday.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow on the X platform, stating, “The tragic incident at the political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, is deeply distressing.”
According to The Hindu, earlier on Saturday, Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma. Subramanian reported that the rally held by Vijay in Nadu resulted in at least 29 deaths and around 50 injuries.
The Tamil Nadu Health Department and the Chief Minister’s office have not immediately responded to media requests for comments.
Stalin remarked on the X platform, “The news from Karur is concerning.” He has instructed ministers and officials to immediately provide emergency medical assistance to the injured at the scene and dispatch additional support from nearby Tiruchirappalli.
Reports indicate that at least 44 doctors from Tiruchirappalli and Salem have been sent to Karur for rescue efforts.
