Police Enforcement in Margate: Parents to be Penalized for Children Violating Curfew Order

Recent incidents of juvenile delinquency have been on the rise. During the second weekend of June, a man from Pennsylvania was kicked in the face inside a mall in North Wildwood; two groups of girls got into a fight on the boardwalk in Atlantic City; and a rumored “flash” party in Long Branch was halted before it even began. The Margate police will be enforcing the parental responsibility portion of the curfew ordinance dating back to 1976. Local laws dictate that parents are accountable for their children’s behavior between 10 pm and 6 am. If law enforcement finds unsupervised youths “engaging in any illegal activity, jeopardizing their own safety, or disregarding lawful orders from the police,” they will be taken to the police headquarters, and parents or guardians will be summoned to take charge of the minors. Parents or guardians may also receive subpoenas. A first offense could result in a fine ranging from $100 to $1,000. A repeated violation may lead to the same fine, along with a requirement for parents and children to complete 90 days of community service together.

Century-old Carousel Reopens after 5 Years of Closure

According to Seaside Heights, after years of maintenance, the Floyd L. Moreland Carousel, with a century-long history, will reopen to the public on July 3 (Wednesday), leading up to the holiday on July 4, starting at 6 pm. The carousel last opened to the public in 2019, over 5 years ago. Municipal officials stated that the complete schedule for this amusement ride will be made public soon. Seaside Heights obtained ownership of the carousel in exchange for a stretch of beach from Casino Pier in 2017, then sent it to a company in Ohio for meticulous restoration. In July 2023, it returned to the town and was reassembled between Sampson and Carteret Avenues.

Beating the Summer Heat: How to Stay Cool and Save Money

As summer kicks in, with temperatures soaring into the 90s Fahrenheit during the weekend days, here are some tips to help you stay cool while also saving money.

Block Sunlight: Close blinds or curtains to reduce the workload on your air conditioner.

Use Fans: Fans promote air circulation and create a wind chill effect, which is more cost-effective than air conditioning. Position fans to draw in cooler air or expel hot air.

Adjust Thermostat: Raising the temperature on your thermostat can significantly decrease energy consumption. Consider using a smart thermostat that adjusts temperatures based on weather conditions and daily routines.

Energy-Efficient Cooking: Ovens can impact indoor temperatures. During heatwaves, minimize oven use and opt for slow cookers or microwaves.

Lower Room Temperatures Selectively: For instance, avoid cooling empty rooms or spaces not in use. Close doors and vents in those areas.
