In the early morning of December 2nd, a strong smell of gas suddenly appeared in the Yunman Lake campus of Guizhou Medical University, which was unpleasant and irritating. Thousands of students were evacuated from the campus.
Several students of Guizhou Medical University posted videos on December 2nd, claiming that there was a heavy smell of gas in the campus at night, suspecting a gas leak accident. The school instructed students to evacuate the dormitories.
According to a report by the Beijing News, the incident occurred at the Yunman Lake campus of the university. Some students mentioned that the gas smell was particularly strong in Area A of the school. When contacted by various departments of the school, the staff either claimed they were unaware or declined to disclose further information. Officials from the local town government stated that the police station preliminarily suspected a gas leak.
One student mentioned that around 11 pm on December 1st, the dormitory management of Area A notified the evacuation, and students from adjacent dormitories were also evacuated simultaneously. Another student stated that most students waited at the school to return to their dormitories, while some stayed at nearby hotels, hostels, or went home. Hotel and hostel owners near the school mentioned that due to limited rooms, many students had to share one room for rest.
Multiple Chinese media outlets such as Cover News reported that in the early hours of December 2nd, thousands of students were evacuated from the dormitories and spent the night in public places. It wasn’t until around 6 am that the university issued a notice allowing students to return to their dormitories, and evacuated students gradually returned to their rooms. Classes at the university were suspended on December 2nd morning.
A responsible person from the security department of the Yunman Lake campus of Guizhou Medical University mentioned that at 11:59 pm on December 1st, they received feedback from students. After investigation by the school and firefighters, the possibility of a gas leak within the campus was definitively ruled out.
On the morning of December 2nd, it was learned that gas company workers found dumped liquefied gas in a green area near the An Kang Avenue Kindergarten, suspected to have been unlawfully handled and dumped by nearby street vendors.
