At least 34 dead as floods hit Northeast India.

The government of India stated on Monday (June 2) that serious floods have occurred in the northeastern region of India over the past four days, triggering landslides and resulting in at least 34 deaths. The meteorological department predicts that there will be more heavy rain.

According to Reuters, the Indian government said in a statement that over a thousand tourists stranded in Sikkim, near the Himalayas, have been evacuated on Monday. The government has deployed military rescue teams to Meghalaya to rescue over five hundred people trapped in flooded areas.

Images from the Indian news agency ANI show that roads and houses in Silchar have been submerged in water, with fallen trees scattered on the roads.

Sonu Devi, a resident of Silchar, told ANI that they are facing many challenges, with their children’s beds being submerged in water. “We couldn’t sleep all night,” Devi said.

In neighboring country Bangladesh, a landslide in the Sylhet region of the northeast has resulted in the death of at least a family of four. On Sunday (June 1), hundreds of shelters were opened in mountainous areas like Rangamati, Bandarban, and Khagrachhari.

Authorities in India and Bangladesh have issued warnings, indicating the possibility of more landslides and floods, urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain cautious.

The northeastern parts of India and Bangladesh are prone to heavy rain, leading to deadly landslides and flash floods that affect millions of people every year.
