Guatemala Orchid Exhibition: Blooming Flowers Vie for Beauty

The National Exhibition of Orchids, organized by the Guatemalan Orchid Association (AGO), opened on Thursday (March 12) in Guatemala City and will continue until this weekend (March 15). Different varieties of orchids are on display, each showcasing its beauty in a unique way, showcasing either a single standout bloom or a vibrant competition of various beauties, leaving visitors mesmerized.

This exhibition gathers a wide variety of precious orchid species and is a major event in the Guatemalan orchid world, aiming to showcase the country’s rich diversity of orchids. It attracts a large number of gardening enthusiasts and experts from all over the country each year. The theme of this year’s exhibition is “Nature Made Art.”

Guatemala is rich in orchid resources, boasting over 4,000 species known for their diverse varieties and vibrant colors. Its national flower is the famous white-flowered nun orchid (Lycaste skinneri). Other characteristic varieties include the Guatemala miniature orchid (Lepanthes guatemalensis) and other tiny species.

Because of this, this Central American country hosts multiple orchid shows every year, with the largest national exhibitions primarily taking place around February. This period is Guatemala’s dry season and also the peak flowering season for many orchids.
