Car crashes into crowd outside a school in Chengdu, injuring at least 5

On the evening of April 20th, a car crashed into a crowd outside a school gate in Chengdu, Sichuan, injuring at least 5 people.

Late on April 20th, the Wenchuan District Branch of the Chengdu Public Security Bureau reported that at around 6:26 pm that day, an incident described as a “traffic accident” occurred on Huatu Road in Wenchuan, resulting in injuries to 5 people.

According to the report, the driver involved is a 38-year-old man surnamed Guo, who was promptly apprehended by the police. Preliminary tests have ruled out suspicions of drunk driving or driving under the influence of drugs.

Reports from Lianhe Zaobao indicated that the incident took place near the intersection of Huatu Road and Huafeng Street, in close proximity to several schools within a hundred meters. Photos circulating online show that after the accident, a white private car veered into the greenbelt at the intersection, with various objects scattered on the road and within the green area. Ambulances were seen parked at the intersection and outside the school gate, with students in different school uniforms passing by after school.

Local internet users took to social media platforms to inquire about the casualties, with questions like “How many people died? Heard there were many children?” Some users shared disturbing accounts, such as “Several injured, a very young child lying on the ground by the flower bed with blood all over, intentionally hit by a person at the school gate.” Others claimed, “The key figure was seeking revenge on society, purposefully crashing into people at the school gate.”

However, official reports did not specify whether the injured included students or children. It was only mentioned that the injured individuals were receiving medical treatment and were “currently not in life-threatening condition”, while the “further investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing”.
