On the evening of May 20th, 2025, President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) Lai Ching-te, accompanied by Vice President Hsiao Mei-chin, hosted a state banquet for the President of the Republic of Palau, Surangel Whipps Jr., and his spouse. President Lai expressed his hope to work together with President Whipps Jr. to continuously promote tourism exchange and sports cooperation between the two countries, allowing Taiwan and Palau to shine on the international stage together.
President Lai Ching-te mentioned in his speech that he was delighted to host President Whipps Jr. and the visiting delegation at the Presidential Office. He recalled his visits to Palau in 2022 and the previous year when he was warmly welcomed by President Whipps Jr. and the Palauan people. Wearing a floral shirt, he felt the warmth and hospitality of the Palauan people, making him feel at home and welcomed.
During his first visit to Palau, President Lai shared experiences with President Whipps Jr. such as driving a yacht into Milk Lake, trying volcanic mud facials, fishing together, and taking leisurely walks on the beach enjoying the sea breeze. Last year, during his second visit, he was honored to address the Parliament and witness the fruitful cooperation between the two countries.
President Lai praised Palau’s renowned island beauty, often referred to as “God’s Aquarium,” where snorkeling alongside sharks leaves a lasting impression. He emphasized the successful implementation of the “travel bubble” between Palau and Taiwan during the pandemic, creating a safe travel model. Looking ahead, he looks forward to more Taiwanese tourists visiting Palau to enhance understanding between the two allied nations.
President Lai also highlighted the sports cooperation between Taiwan and Palau, mentioning the upcoming “Pacific Mini Games” hosted by Palau where Taiwanese baseball and table tennis national teams have already begun training. He expressed full support for Palauan athletes, wishing them great success in various competitions.
“I look forward to working with President Whipps Jr. to let Taiwan and Palau shine on the international stage together. And finally, I express my gratitude to everyone in Palau with the Palauan word ‘Mesulang’,” President Lai concluded.
President Whipps Jr. expressed his honor in returning to Taiwan on the first anniversary of his inauguration, marking his first official visit after re-election. He emphasized the significance of gathering with friends, who are more like family, and thanked President Lai for his warm words and Taiwan’s unwavering support, which has strengthened the bilateral relationship over time.
Acknowledging President Lai’s diplomatic initiatives, leadership, and vision, President Whipps Jr. resonated deeply with Taiwan’s shared values, firm support for allies, and commitment to sustainable and inclusive development, which are highly appreciated by the people of Palau.
“In facing challenges ranging from security to climate change, unity is crucial. Supporting Taiwan’s participation in international forums on climate change, security, and health is vital for the world and particularly for Palau, as we believe the world becomes a better place with Taiwan involved in decision-making,” President Whipps Jr. stated.
President Whipps Jr. mentioned Palau will host the Pacific Islands Forum in 2026 and will continue close cooperation with Taiwan to ensure the success of this important event. He emphasized standing together firmly against any attempts to silence or isolate democratic partners, underscoring the strong bond between Palau and Taiwan.
President Whipps Jr. stated that overcoming challenges together makes Taiwan and Palau stronger, with their partnership built on trust, respect, and a shared vision for a better future. “Our collective journey in areas such as clean energy, education, smart healthcare, and tourism is just beginning, and together we are stronger.”
