Another Air Scare for United Airlines in the News
United Airlines is once again making headlines for a terrifying incident in the air. On Thursday night, a flight departing from Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey took a frightening turn when a passenger lost control and attempted to forcibly open the cabin door at an altitude of 36,000 feet (approximately 11,000 meters). The unruly passenger then proceeded to attack other passengers onboard. This serious in-flight safety incident led to the plane making an emergency landing at Washington Dulles International Airport.
According to flight data on FlightAware website, the flight involved was United Airlines flight 1551, originally scheduled to fly from Newark Airport to Guatemala City.
The Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft was carrying 145 passengers and 6 crew members at the time of the incident. The flight took off as scheduled at 6:46 p.m. on Thursday evening for what was supposed to be a 5-hour journey. However, less than two hours after takeoff, chaos erupted onboard, prompting the pilots to make the impromptu decision to land at Dulles Airport.
Recordings from air traffic control revealed that as the aircraft descended towards Dulles Airport, the pilots informed the tower controller of the harrowing scene inside the cabin. At 36,000 feet, a passenger attempted to open the left side mid-cabin door (door 2L) and then proceeded to assault another passenger. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
A spokesperson for United Airlines confirmed the incident in a media interview, stating that the flight subsequently landed safely at Dulles Airport, and law enforcement authorities promptly took action against the disruptive passenger.
Following the incident, the flight was canceled, and United Airlines arranged alternative flights for the affected passengers on Friday morning.
This serious aviation safety event is just the latest in a series of recent irrational passenger incidents for United Airlines. Earlier this month, a flight from the Dominican Republic to Newark Airport experienced a violent episode when a disruptive passenger attacked a flight attendant and attempted to forcibly enter the cockpit during landing.
