On April 4th, a horrifying stabbing incident occurred near Taiyuan Street in Heping District, Shenyang City, Liaoning Province. Reports circulated online stating that six people died and more than ten were injured, with one man being decapitated on the spot before the assailant jumped to his death. This case is one of the recent series of retaliatory social violence incidents happening across China, reflecting the long-standing societal tensions under the authoritarian regime of the Chinese Communist Party.
According to local residents, the violent episode unfolded in the afternoon around 4 p.m. in the busy commercial area near Taiyuan Street in Heping District, Shenyang City, resulting in significant casualties.
One resident, using the pseudonym Liu Jingshu, disclosed to media that, “The incident occurred around 4 p.m., near the Darunfa Hair Salon in South Wu Ma Road on Taiyuan Street, where the assailant attacked 2 individuals, then proceeded to stab 4 more people near Nanjing Third Elementary School.”
“In total, 6 people died, with one individual having their head chopped off, making it a gruesome scene, and over ten others were injured,” she said. “The assailant seemed to have come for revenge on society, targeting both old and young victims. The most tragic was the one without a head, who was a scrap collector.”
Another resident, Yang Jie, mentioned seeing multiple people lying on the ground with one lacking a head. He recounted witnessing the chaos of the assailant slashing along a street for about 100 meters, causing fatalities and injuries before ultimately taking his own life by leaping from a building.
Yang also noted rumors of another perpetrator fleeing the scene, though such claims have yet to be verified.
The news of the incident quickly spread online, with ample related search records on the mainland Douyin platform. Some content creators uploaded videos titled “Traffic Jam on Taiyuan Street,” prompting numerous netizens to inquire about the incident or request footage from the scene. Within just 5 hours, the video comment sections were cleared.
Official announcements from the local authorities have yet to be released. Relevant footage on Chinese social media has been swiftly censored, with discussions among netizens also restricted, only a few making their way onto overseas platforms.
Many Chinese netizens voiced their concerns on various platforms. One stated, “Why are there so many random stabbings on the streets now? The societal resentment and hostility seem to be escalating.” Another expressed, “Frequent acts of extreme violence are alarming, but what’s even more chilling is people’s increasing numbness to such incidents. If even the basic sense of security is eroding, no amount of stability narrative can conceal the reality’s cracks.”
The Shenyang street killing incident is not an isolated case. In recent times, similar random acts of violence have occurred in various parts of China, sparking widespread social attention.
Just days prior to the Shenyang incident, on March 31, a knife attack took place on Qingsong Road in Jiang’an District, Wuhan City. A 44-year-old man named Wu embarked on a stabbing spree with a fruit knife, with Wuhan authorities reporting 4 injured individuals receiving medical treatment without life-threatening injuries, though unofficial reports suggest a higher toll.
On March 29, a vehicular ramming incident transpired at Da Han Jidajie Market in Fangshan District, Beijing. According to witness accounts and numerous mainland media reports, a man around the age of 50 drove a heavy-duty excavator through a crowded marketplace, targeting stalls and pedestrians along narrow lanes.
An informant revealed that the driver had long been dissatisfied with unresolved forced evictions issues. However, official statements regarding the event’s details and motives are yet to be released. Post-incident, authorities swiftly enhanced control measures, censoring keywords on online platforms and removing select media coverage.
Independent commentator Cai Shenkun remarked on a platform that the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson frequently touts China as the safest place globally, yet a gruesome murder case prominently involved American victims. The dilemma of how the news spokesperson would handle enquiries from foreign journalists remains uncertain.
Current events have led commentator Yue Shan to assert that many internet users are now realizing the importance of accountability, understanding that the Communist Party reigns over the populace’s sufferings without recourse for grievances. Shan emphasized the need for a fundamental shift in awareness, stating that only with the disintegration of the authoritarian Chinese Communist Party can the people enjoy freedom of speech, government oversight, and societal tranquility.
