On Tuesday, August 20, the second day of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in the United States, the spotlight turned to Vice President Harris and her showdown with the Republican candidate and former President Trump.
Harris’s campaign team announced on Tuesday that in the remaining three days of the convention, they will focus on “credible messengers” from key battleground states. Democratic senators and representatives from Nevada, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Arizona have been invited to speak.
The campaign team stated that giving prominent speaking opportunities to local elected officials is a deliberate strategy to reach undecided moderate voters and maximize efforts to secure the 270 electoral votes needed for Harris in November.
Additionally, some Republicans are expected to attend and speak in support of Harris.
The theme of Tuesday’s activities was “Bold visions for America’s future,” signaling a shift towards a new message from the Democratic Party and its leadership.
Organizers strategically positioned Tuesday evening’s activities focusing on Harris’s forward-looking strategic vision in contrast to Trump’s “Make America Great Again” agenda.
As part of the Democratic Party’s plan, each evening will feature speeches from elected officials and party leaders, as well as appearances from “ordinary Americans” and performers showcasing their talents.
Former President Obama, Former First Lady Michelle Obama, and Harris’s husband, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, are scheduled to speak on the second night of the Democratic National Convention.
According to Harris’s campaign team, Michelle Obama is expected to highlight Harris’s experiences and values, emphasizing her qualifications and capability to serve as President. Obama will focus on what the Democratic Party needs to do to defeat Trump in the upcoming elections.
With 76 days left until the November presidential election, the first night of the Democratic National Convention provided an honorable exit for current President Biden as he passed the torch to Harris amidst a warm welcome.
“In the sum of our collective efforts over the past four years, we have achieved extraordinary progress,” Biden said during his speech. “When I say ‘we,’ I refer to ‘myself and Harris.'”
Harris briefly appeared at the convention on Monday and joined Biden on stage after his speech for a conversation and embrace.
“Joe, thank you for your historic leadership, your lifelong service to our nation, and everything you will continue to do,” she said. “We are forever grateful to you.”
Biden left Chicago later that evening after concluding his speech.
On Tuesday, Harris will travel to Wisconsin to attend a gathering in Milwaukee before returning to Chicago later that night.
Protesters continued demonstrating near the convention venue, the “United Center.” On Monday, dozens of protesters against the Gaza conflict crossed safety barriers and were subsequently arrested by local law enforcement.
Trump and his running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, continued their campaign rallies in battleground states to connect with voters and maintain campaign momentum.
Trump traveled to Howell, Michigan on Tuesday for a crime and safety event, while Vance held a similar event in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
