New York Mayor Mamdani Calls for Abolition of ICE Amid Protest March

On Saturday (January 24th), both Saturday morning and the previous afternoon, protests against ICE took place in New York City, rallying in support of the people in Minnesota who refuse to comply with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). On Saturday, an ICE agent shot dead a 37-year-old American citizen in Minneapolis. Mayor Mamdani of New York called for “Abolish ICE” on social media platform X.

During the Friday march, New Yorkers gathered in Union Square, holding signs that read “End ICE” and “New Yorkers Against ICE,” marching along East 14th Street. The crowd chanted slogans like “Our streets don’t need ICE.”

Multiple media outlets reported that on Saturday, ICE agents shot and killed a man identified as Alex Pretti, a nurse in the intensive care unit of a local veterans hospital in Minneapolis. The Department of Homeland Security claimed that the individual was armed and attempted to attack federal agents, engaging in “intense resistance.” However, local investigators in Minnesota have a different account and are gathering videos taken by numerous civilians at the scene. In one video, several ICE agents were seen surrounding a person lying on the ground, firing multiple shots.

On Friday, protesters against ICE, including activists and clergy, gathered outside the entrance of the Target Center in downtown Minneapolis. Participants in the march held signs protesting, with messages like “Justice for Renée Good.”

On January 7th, an ICE agent fatally shot Renée Nicole Good, causing tension in the city. The organizers of the march called for a stop to work, school, and shopping on Friday.

Mayor Mamdani of New York condemned ICE on Saturday on platform X. “At a time when tens of thousands across America are protesting the rampant lawlessness and impunity of ICE, federal agents today shot and killed another protester in Minneapolis,” Mamdani said in the X post. “ICE is terrorizing our city. ICE puts us all in danger. Abolish ICE!”
