On Sunday, December 28th, a tragic accident occurred in the southern part of Mexico involving a passenger train derailment, resulting in at least 13 deaths and 98 injuries. The rescue operation is currently ongoing.
According to a statement released by the Mexican Navy on social media on Sunday, a passenger train derailed in the Tehuantepec region of Oaxaca, in southern Mexico.
The announcement mentioned that the train, which connects the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, was carrying a total of 250 people, including 9 crew members and 241 passengers. The military mobilized 360 personnel, 20 vehicles, and multiple air ambulances to participate in the rescue efforts.
The statement also indicated that 193 individuals have been safely evacuated from the scene, with 98 people sustaining injuries, out of which 36 are currently receiving medical treatment in hospitals.
Mexican President X expressed on the platform that 5 of the wounded are in critical condition. He further stated that he has instructed military and interior ministry officials to rush to the scene to coordinate rescue operations and pledged to continue providing updates on the latest information regarding the accident.
Authorities stated that the derailment took place between the towns of Chivela and Nizanda. The Mexican Attorney General’s Office has initiated an investigation into the derailment incident.
The Governor of Oaxaca, Salomon Jara, issued a statement confirming that multiple government agencies have been dispatched to the site to assist injured and trapped passengers.
This transoceanic train covers a distance of approximately 290 kilometers and was officially inaugurated in 2023 as a significant infrastructure project promoted by the then-President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, with the aim of fostering the development of southeastern Mexico.
