Former Vice Chairman of the Taiwan Democratic Alliance, Li Yuefeng, was sentenced to life imprisonment for taking bribes totaling more than 93.42 million Chinese yuan (RMB).
On July 3, the Intermediate People’s Court of Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province, publicly announced the verdict for Li Yuefeng, former member of the 14th National People’s Congress Standing Committee, former Deputy Director of the Supervision and Justice Committee, and former Executive Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of the Taiwan Democratic Alliance, on the bribery charges. Li Yuefeng was convicted of bribery and sentenced to life imprisonment, deprived of political rights for life, and had all his personal property confiscated.
According to the court, from 2011 to 2024, Li Yuefeng took advantage of his positions as Deputy Chief Prosecutor of the First Division of the Chongqing Municipal People’s Procuratorate, Deputy Chief Prosecutor of the Chongqing Municipal People’s Procuratorate, Vice Chairman of the Chongqing Municipal Political Consultative Conference, Executive Vice Chairman of the Taiwan Democratic Alliance Central Committee, member of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee, Deputy Director of the Supervision and Justice Committee, and other positions, as well as the convenience and conditions created by his own authority and status, to provide assistance in judicial case handling, collection of engineering funds, and business operations for relevant units and individuals. He directly or through his relatives accepted property from others, totaling more than 93.42 million yuan.
In March 2024, Li Yuefeng was investigated while in office and subsequently dismissed in October. The first-instance trial was held on April 24, 2025.
Public records show that Li Yuefeng was born in July 1958 in Yuzhong District, Chongqing City, with his ancestral home in Zhongli, Taiwan. He joined the Taiwan Democratic Alliance in November 2001.
Li Yuefeng had long been working in Chongqing, serving as Deputy Chief Prosecutor of the Chongqing Municipal People’s Procuratorate, Vice Chairman of the Chongqing Municipal Political Consultative Conference, Deputy Chief Prosecutor of the Chongqing Municipal People’s Procuratorate, member of the National People’s Congress, Deputy Director of the National People’s Congress Supervision and Justice Committee, and later took the position of Executive Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of the Taiwan Democratic Alliance in December 2017, equivalent to a ministerial level, until being investigated.
This case is rare in the Communist Party’s “anti-corruption” campaign involving high-ranking members of the “democratic parties.”
The Taiwan Democratic Self-Governing Alliance, abbreviated as the Taiwan Alliance, is one of the so-called “Eight Democratic Parties” of the Communist Party of China, established in Hong Kong on November 12, 1947. According to official website information, the Taiwan Alliance currently has organizations in 19 provinces and municipalities, with over three thousand members.
