European Parliament Delegation and Governor of Guam to Visit Taiwan, Will Meet with Lai Ching-te

A delegation of three members of the European Parliament and the Governor of Guam, Lourdes A. Leon Guerrero, arrived in Taiwan on the 25th. They are scheduled to meet with President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) Tsai Ing-wen. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) expressed sincere welcome for the visit of the European Parliament delegation and Governor of Guam to Taiwan.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) issued a press release stating that the European Parliament delegation will be visiting Taiwan from the 25th to the 30th of the month. The members include European Parliament members Reinis Pozņaks, Beatrice Timgren, and policy advisor Jens Vornøe. This visit marks another European Parliament delegation visit to Taiwan this year, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed a warm welcome.

During their stay in Taiwan, the delegation will meet with President Tsai Ing-wen, visit Foreign Minister Joseph Wu, attend a banquet hosted by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Tien Chung-kwang, and engage in exchanges with the Legislative Yuan, relevant government departments, civil society representatives, and think tanks on Taiwan-Europe relations, regional security, and economic cooperation to gain a deeper understanding of the latest political and economic situation in the Republic of China (Taiwan) and its future policy direction.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) noted that the European Parliament has long demonstrated support for Taiwan through resolutions, joint letters, and parliamentary inquiries. The recent adoption of the “Common Foreign and Security Policy” (CFSP) and “Common Security and Defense Policy” (CSDP) annual implementation report resolutions on April 2 included pro-Taiwan language. This includes condemning the escalation of tensions in the Taiwan Strait by the Chinese Communist Party and continued distortion of United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758, as well as urging the European Union to assist Taiwan in enhancing its security resilience. It showcases the cross-party consensus of support for Taiwan in the new session of the European Parliament.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) expressed sincere gratitude for the European Parliament’s steadfast support for Taiwan through concrete actions. The government will continue to deepen cooperation with partners sharing similar democratic principles in Europe based on the existing solid and friendly foundation to strengthen democratic resilience and jointly build a solid and mutually beneficial value alliance.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) stated that Governor of Guam Lourdes A. Leon Guerrero and her delegation will be visiting Taiwan from the 25th to the 31st. This visit marks Governor Guerrero’s first visit to Taiwan since taking office in 2019, just a few months after hosting President Tsai Ing-wen for a transit visit to Guam in December last year under the theme of “Prosperous Southern Islands, Sustainable Wisdom,” highlighting the significance and friendship with the Republic of China (Taiwan). The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed a warm welcome.

During their stay in Taiwan, the delegation will meet with President Tsai Ing-wen, attend banquets hosted by President Tsai and Foreign Minister Joseph Wu respectively, visit the Ministry of Transportation and city mayors, participate in the Taipei International Tourism Expo, and engage in exchanges with representatives from tourism, healthcare, agriculture, and fisheries industries to expand bilateral cooperation in various fields.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) pointed out that Taiwan and Guam share a common indigenous culture and are staunch democratic partners. Taiwan is the top choice for medical transfers for the people of Guam, while Guam is a favored travel destination for the Taiwanese people, underscoring the multifaceted connections between the two. Governor Guerrero’s visit to Taiwan will further deepen the mutually beneficial and cooperative partnership between the two sides.
