On Monday, January 6, 2025, the first winter storm of the year swept across most parts of the United States, bringing record-breaking snowfall. By 8 a.m. on Monday morning, the snow accumulation in the Washington D.C. area had reached around 5 inches (12.7 centimeters), leading to the closure of federal offices and public schools.

Despite the inconvenience caused by this rare snowstorm, the people of Washington D.C., also known as the nation’s capital, found ways to enjoy the snowy weather. On that day, hundreds of residents bundled up and eagerly headed to the snow-covered Meridian Hill Park to participate in a snowball fight called the “Great Meridian Chill Battle.”

This annual event filled with childlike delight is organized by the Washington D.C. Snowball Fight Association. This year marked the 15th edition of the event since its inception in 2009. According to the organizers, the event officially kicked off at noon on Monday and lasted for about an hour.

It is reported that this event has no strict rules. Participants were randomly divided into two groups, and once they heard the starting whistle, they gleefully grabbed snowballs and hurled them at each other. Despite the intense battles, laughter and cheers filled the snow-covered field as people joyfully indulged in the rare winter fun. Even the dogs brought by participants happily frolicked and ran around in the snow.

It is worth mentioning that while this winter outdoor event brought joy to the people, it also raised funds for the Special Olympics D.C., adding a charitable aspect to the festivities.
