Story of Ambition: Commemorating Veterans Day

On November 11th, the Nixon Library hosted a Veterans Day event where Congresswoman Young Kim of the 40th District and former Navy Lieutenant and “Top Gun” program director, Dan Pederson, delivered speeches. Yorba Linda Mayor Tara Campbell, Councilwoman Janice Lim, and over a hundred residents attended the event.

Young Kim expressed gratitude towards World War II veterans, Korean War veterans, and families who sacrificed to provide freedom and opportunities for others. She thanked Vietnam War veterans and welcomed them home, acknowledging their service and sacrifices. She also extended appreciation to those who served in the Gulf War, Iraq War, and Afghanistan War, highlighting their contributions to America’s liberty.

On November 11, 1919, President Woodrow Wilson suggested Armistice Day as a day to reflect on the sacrifices of heroes who served the country and to express gratitude for victory. The armistice allowed the United States to overcome challenges, providing opportunities and advocating for peace and justice internationally.

In 1926, Congress designated November 11 as Armistice Day. In 1945, WWII veteran Raymond Weeks proposed expanding the day to honor all veterans, leading to Dwight D. Eisenhower signing a bill in 1954 to establish Veterans Day as a national holiday.

Regarding the ongoing elections, Young Kim stated that veterans who have fought for freedom paved the way for expression of differing opinions and representation of various political stances. She currently holds 55.8% of the vote and is expected to be reelected.

Dan Pederson, who turns 90 next month, shared his experiences in training fighter pilots during the Vietnam War, revolutionizing the Navy’s combat tactics and significantly improving the kill ratio from 2.5:1 to 22:1. He emphasized the importance of honoring past patriots and continuing their legacy.

The Navy Fighter Weapons School, also known as “Top Gun,” was established in 1963 in San Diego County, impacting future American military strategies. Pederson highlighted the camaraderie among the pilots and their dedication to improving combat proficiency despite limited resources.

Pederson mentioned the enduring bond and brotherhood formed among the pilots during training, including the challenges they faced and the lifelong friendships they developed. He emphasized the significance of their achievements in enhancing the Navy’s kill ratio and the cultural impact of the “Top Gun” program.

Looking back on the history of the Naval Aviation community and the advancements made through programs like “Top Gun,” Pederson expressed gratitude for the opportunity to gather at the Nixon Library’s rose garden and celebrate patriotism. He extended well wishes for good health and prosperity to the attendees and future generations.
