The 42nd Hong Kong Film Awards ceremony was held in a grand manner at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre on the 14th. Tony Leung won the Best Actor award for the sixth time for his performance in the movie “Golden Finger”. The award was supposed to be presented by Lau Ching Wan and Miriam Yeung, the lead actors of “Lost in Time”, but due to Lau Ching Wan’s illness, Louis Koo stepped in.
When Lau Ching Wan and Miriam Yeung were invited to present the award, the music of the theme song of “Lost in Time” was played. Upon seeing Louis Koo on stage, the audience thought the host had mistaken the name, but Louis Koo humorously played along by directly reading Lau Ching Wan’s speech and introducing himself as Lau Ching Wan, jokingly saying, “Today is the first and last time in history that I present an award in Louis Koo’s style!”, which brought laughter to the entire venue.
Though it was Louis Koo standing there, Miriam Yeung laughed and complimented Lau Ching Wan, saying he looked “handsome”. Louis Koo referred to Miriam Yeung as “Ah Min” from “Lost in Time”, and she playfully called him “Ah Kit” in return. Referring to the past when three out of four actors in “Lost in Time” won awards except for Lau Ching Wan, Louis Koo, pretending to be Lau Ching Wan, said, “I admit I have bad luck, but I have talent, I’ll win the award in 13 years!”
Miriam Yeung invited several nominees for “Best Actor” to act out their reaction if they lost, with the comedian Wong Cho Lam comically storming off in anger, while others had no reaction. Meanwhile, Tony Leung, who was filming in Germany, dressed in a suit, witnessed the crucial moment via video. Just before presenting the award, Louis Koo whispered to his colleague Lam Po Yee, “I’m afraid if I go up there, Lam Po Yee will think he’s the winner, he won’t really know until the end of the Hong Kong Film Awards!”
In the end, Miriam Yeung announced that Tony Leung won the award. As Tony Leung is currently filming in Germany and unable to attend, the award was accepted on his behalf by his wife Carina Lau.
Carina Lau, while onstage connecting with Tony Leung, candidly said, “I know that when people see Tony Leung winning an award again, they will definitely say, ‘Oh my, not again, it’s him!’ Give others a chance!” She further explained that after living with him for so many years, she truly believes that Tony Leung is a great actor.
On the screen, Tony Leung appeared somewhat helpless and shy upon hearing his wife’s praise, thanking “Sister Kar Ling” and even reaching out to stop his wife from speaking, trying to get her to say “good actor” instead, which amused the audience. Carina Lau further explained, “When an ordinary actor puts in a hundred or two hundred percent effort, Tony Leung puts in five hundred or even a thousand percent.”
At the age of 62, Tony Leung first won the Best Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards in 1995 for his role in Wong Kar Wai’s “Chungking Express”. Subsequently, he went on to win the award for Best Actor in Hong Kong Film Awards for the second to the fifth time through films like “Happy Together” (1998), “In the Mood for Love” (2001), “Infernal Affairs” (2003), and “2046” (2005). This year, he clinched his sixth Best Actor award for his performance in “Golden Finger”.
