On February 4th, the official announcement from the mainland stated that Luo Weiqi, the former Party Secretary and Director of the Department of Education of Guangdong Province, is under investigation for serious violations of discipline and law.
Luo Weiqi, a Ph.D., a second-level professor, a doctoral supervisor, a counselor to the Guangdong Provincial Government, a national education inspector, a member of the Education Informationization Expert Committee of the Ministry of Education, the honorary director of the Guangdong Smart Education Research Institute, and the former Director and Party Secretary of the Department of Education of Guangdong Province, according to the website of Jinan University. His research focuses on artificial intelligence, smart education, education informationization, data security, and big data.
In July 1982, Luo Weiqi graduated from the Mathematics Department of Jinan University with a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics. In July 2000, he graduated from the School of Electronic Information at South China University of Technology with a Ph.D. in Control Theory and Control Engineering.
From 1982 to 1994, Luo Weiqi served as a teacher in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Jinan University. From 1994 to 1995, he served as the Assistant to the President and Director of the Network Center of Jinan University.
From 1995 to 2002, Luo Weiqi served as the Vice President, Standing Committee member of the Party Committee, and Director of the Network Center at Jinan University.
From 2002 to 2006, Luo Weiqi served as the Deputy Director, member of the Party group, and Director of the Examination Center of the Department of Education of Guangdong Province. From 2006 to 2017, he served as the Secretary of the Education Working Committee of the Provincial Party Committee, Director of the Department of Education, and Party Secretary of the Department of Education of Guangdong Province.
From 2017 to 2018, Luo Weiqi served as a member of the Standing Committee of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and a professor at Jinan University.
Earlier this year, Luo Weiqi had publicly attended events.
According to a report from the “Southern Metropolis Daily,” on January 17, 2026, the second meeting of the first board of directors of the Smart Education Professional Committee of the China Private Education Association was held in Guangzhou. Luo Weiqi, who served as the chairman of the committee, delivered a speech at the meeting.
