Trump: Will Not Run for Vice President in 2028

On October 27, 2025, President Donald Trump spoke to reporters aboard Air Force One, excluding the possibility of running for vice president in the 2028 election. However, when asked about seeking a third presidential term, Trump did not provide a clear answer.

The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution prohibits anyone from being elected as U.S. president for a third term. Some supporters have suggested a workaround strategy of “Vice President – Resignation,” wherein Trump would first run for vice president and then assume the presidency by resignation.

President Trump responded to this by saying, “In theory, I could do that.” However, he stressed, “I won’t do that. I think it’s too cute. Yes, I will rule out that possibility because it’s too cute. I don’t think the people would like that. That wouldn’t… that wouldn’t be the right thing to do.”

Regarding the possibility of a third term, Trump stated, “I would love to do that. My approval rating is at an all-time high.” When asked if he was not ruling out seeking a third term, he replied, “Am I not ruling it out? I mean, you gotta tell me.”

Despite this, he mentioned potential successors, calling Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio “great people.”

“I think if they formed a team, that would be unstoppable,” he said. “I really believe that. I believe.”

Trump’s ally, former Chief Strategist Steve Bannon, who served during his first term, asserted in an interview last week that “Trump will serve as president in 2028… At the right time, we will announce specific plans. But indeed, there is such a plan.”

During his visit to Asia, President Trump also confirmed to reporters that he underwent an MRI scan earlier this month, with the results being “perfect,” though he did not specify the reason for the scan.

At 79 years old, Trump is one of the oldest presidents in American history. While a White House physician stated earlier this month that his health was “excellent,” the White House revealed in July of this year that he experienced leg swelling and bruising on his right hand. At that time, the doctor explained that the leg issues were benign and common in the over-70 population due to “chronic venous insufficiency,” while the hand bruising was related to frequent handshakes and aspirin intake.
