6.2 Magnitude Earthquake in Japan’s Okinawa Islands Felt Noticeably in Shanghai and Hangzhou

On July 3rd at noon, a 6.2 magnitude shallow earthquake struck the Ryukyu Islands in Japan. Numerous netizens from Shanghai and Hangzhou in mainland China reported feeling strong tremors.

According to official measurements from the China Earthquake Networks Center, the earthquake occurred at 12:04 on July 3rd, with a magnitude of 6.2 and a depth of 10 kilometers. The epicenter was located at 26.23 degrees north latitude and 126.18 degrees east longitude.

On social media, many netizens from Shanghai expressed their concerns, with posts like “Did Shanghai experience an earthquake today? Why do I feel dizzy?” Residents from districts in Shanghai such as Jiading, Huangpu, Hongkou, Changning, and Minhang also reported feeling the tremors, with swinging chandeliers, dizziness, and some mistaking the symptoms for low blood sugar.

A netizen from the Minhang district mentioned feeling the tremors and immediately running downstairs for safety. Meanwhile, netizens from Zhejiang province, including Hangzhou and Wenzhou, reported significant shaking in tall buildings, causing dizziness. Some even mentioned being so frightened that they ran away in panic.

Additionally, netizens from Suzhou and Wuxi in Jiangsu province raised concerns online, questioning if an earthquake had occurred due to the swaying buildings. A Weibo member based in Shanghai remarked, “I always thought earthquakes were far away from me until I felt the tremors this time, realizing that earthquakes are actually quite close.”

Another Weibo user under the handle “Fengyunmengyuan” noted that tremors were widely felt in Hangzhou, Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Fujian along the coastal areas. This earthquake was caused by a relatively strong seismic event with its epicenter located in the southern part of the Ryukyu Islands (the Okinawa Trough fault zone).

A netizen named “Hurry home, little girl” raised concerns, suggesting that with the recent frequency of earthquakes, there might be something significant brewing.
