Shen Yun Vocalists Share the Lost Traditional Bel Canto Technique (Part 4)

The traditional bel canto technique used by the Shen Yun Performing Arts ensemble completely shatters the common perception of singing. While many may think that once the voice becomes hoarse, it is unable to sing anymore, in reality, Shen Yun vocalist Tian Li shared her experience: “It’s even better when the voice becomes hoarse because then you can find the right position to sing.”

In this segment, Tian Li discussed the various challenges she faced in transitioning from contemporary singing techniques to traditional bel canto, describing it as a process of “starting from scratch and experiencing a rebirth.”

Moreover, in traditional bel canto, it is essential to “emit small sounds,” so why do Shen Yun vocalists open their mouths so wide while singing? Addressing a common question from the audience, Tian Li provided a detailed explanation. Furthermore, she explained the resonance positions for high, medium, and low notes, and shared methods to make the voice more dimensional, relaxed, and natural.

For those who aspire to sing, Tian Li also analyzed the conditions that are “unsuitable” for mastering Shen Yun’s singing techniques. The bel canto technique taught by Shen Yun’s artistic director, D.F., is truly unique globally. Tian Li will continue releasing videos to gradually introduce everyone to this traditional bel canto technique from the Renaissance period.
