Taiwan Ministry of Interior: Don’t slam on the brakes when encountering an earthquake. Reduce speed, stop the car, and evacuate.

On December 24th at 5:47 p.m., a magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Taitung, Taiwan. The Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of China reminds drivers that in the event of a major earthquake on regular roads, they should not brake suddenly. Instead, they should immediately “safely reduce speed, turn on hazard lights,” pull over to the side of the road, leave the car keys and contact information, and then evacuate.

According to the Central Weather Bureau of Taiwan, the earthquake occurred at 5:47 p.m. on the 24th with a Richter magnitude of 6.1 and a depth of 11.9 kilometers. The epicenter was located 10.1 kilometers north of the Taitung County Government (in Beinan Township, Taitung County), with the highest intensity reaching 5 on the seismic scale in Taitung County.

The Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of China posted on Facebook that a Richter magnitude 6.1 earthquake occurred north of the Taitung County Government, advising people to be alert for possible aftershocks and to check for any loose or falling objects in their surroundings. When an earthquake hits, the most important steps to take are to drop to the ground, take cover, and hold on, prioritizing self-protection and putting safety first.

The Ministry of the Interior stated that for those who just experienced the earthquake, stay calm and be sure to pay attention to safety on the way home.

1. When driving during a major earthquake, remember not to brake suddenly. Upon receiving an earthquake warning or realizing that an earthquake may be happening, promptly “safely reduce speed, turn on hazard lights,” pull over to an open area on the side of the road, confirm that the earthquake has stopped, and then proceed. If possible when parking, try to avoid high-risk areas such as near tall buildings, under trees, or under overpasses.

When an earthquake strikes while driving on regular roads, remember: 1. Pull over to the right side. 2. Use a radio or mobile phone to gather disaster information. 3. Leave the car keys and contact information, bring your driver’s license and vehicle registration with you for evacuation.

If on a highway, remember: 1. Avoid sudden braking as it is very dangerous. 2. Turn on hazard lights, reduce speed, and pull over to the right side. 3. Follow the instructions of highway patrol cars.

2. If indoors, remember: 1. Do not rush to open doors. 2. Do not panic and run outside. 3. Do not deliberately turn off the gas. Instead, hide under a table or in a corner until the earthquake ends; while seeking shelter, be mindful of protecting your head and neck, and watch out for falling furniture, appliances, lights, bookshelves, or shelves.

The Ministry of the Interior reminds everyone to be extra cautious on their way home, take earthquake precautions, stay calm, and return home safely.
