The National Human Rights Commission of the Control Yuan of the Republic of China stated that Oleksandra Matviichuk, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Chair of the Ukrainian human rights organization “Center for Civil Liberties,” emphasized in a special video speech on International Human Rights Day that ceasing resistance will not bring about genuine peace. Matviichuk highlighted the importance for free and democratic societies to establish connections with civil societies worldwide early on and be prepared for potential threats.

The National Human Rights Commission of the Control Yuan of the Republic of China released a press statement on the 10th, announcing that on the 8th, they organized a webinar titled “2025 World Human Rights Day Video Special Lecture – Investigation of War Crimes and Advocacy for International Justice: Experiences and Insights from Ukrainian Civil Society.” Oleksandra Matviichuk, the chair of the Center for Civil Liberties and recipient of the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize, was invited to deliver a special speech. Establishing linkages between free and democratic societies and civil societies globally was underscored as essential by Matviichuk, who emphasized the need for preparedness in the current global landscape characterized by various challenges to human rights and democracy. The discussion touched upon the significance of collective efforts in safeguarding fundamental rights and maintaining democratic principles amidst threats posed by conflicts and authoritarian regimes.
