Former nemesis unexpectedly endorses Adams for mayor; old rivals join forces in mayoral race

New York City’s political scene is once again in upheaval. Mayor Adams officially announced on Thursday, October 23, his support for former governor Cuomo to run for the position of New York City Mayor, and he will step into the community to campaign for Cuomo. This move not only symbolizes the public reconciliation of two former political enemies but also sends shockwaves through this year’s highly competitive mayoral election.

Adams and Cuomo have had a tense relationship in the past, with public clashes between them. In 2021, after Cuomo resigned due to sexual harassment allegations, Adams described Cuomo as a “snake” and a “liar”, openly criticizing his authoritative leadership style and lack of honesty. At that time, he also implied that Cuomo often “betrayed allies” behind their backs, which is why he was unwilling to work with him.

After losing the primary election, Cuomo re-entered the political arena in July as an “independent candidate”, trying to challenge the Democratic socialist and Democratic mayoral candidate, Zohran Mamdani. However, after Adams withdrew from the mayoral race in September, this mayoral election saw a new twist as Adams unexpectedly sided with Cuomo, praising him for showing leadership in times of crisis and expressing willingness to work together to promote public safety and economic recovery in New York City.

The day before the endorsement announcement on October 22, the two appeared together at an NBA game in Manhattan, generating significant media coverage. Although no press conference has been held yet, the image of the two sitting side by side is seen as an “informal joint appearance”. Adams later emphasized in interviews that he will “walk into the community with Cuomo” to campaign for him.

Cuomo’s comeback to run for mayor, following his resignation due to the sexual harassment allegations in 2021, was already closely watched; Adams’ endorsement undoubtedly injects new vigor into his campaign. Observers point out that this move may increase Cuomo’s leverage among moderate voters and traditional Democratic supporters, putting more pressure on Mamdani’s camp, who was leading in the polls.

Adams’ action has also drawn criticism. Some Democrats believe that by supporting a political figure who resigned amid scandals, he is betraying party principles; others questioned whether Adams is using this move to find political backing for himself after leaving office.

Despite the controversies, the high-profile “handshake of reconciliation” between the two undoubtedly adds more drama to the electoral race.
