On September 15th, a netizen complained on a mainland Chinese social platform that Chongqing University of Technology arranged for male international students to move into the Sixiang Building, a female dormitory building, causing inconvenience and worry for the female students.
Photos taken by the netizen showed several black male students carrying luggage while going through the check-in process. The netizen noted that there was a sign at the entrance of the Sixiang Building warning “Female Dormitory, Men Keep Out,” yet the school went against the rules by placing male international students in the female dormitory, leading to online mockery of the school authority for not removing the sign that says “Female Dormitory, Men Keep Out.”
The topic of black male international students residing in female dormitories quickly spread across the Chinese internet, with “Male international students living in female dormitories” becoming a popular keyword.
Following the escalation of the situation, on the evening of September 16th, Chongqing University of Technology released a statement in response, stating that “…recently, there were reports online about ‘male international students at our university living in the same student apartment building as domestic female students.’ Upon investigation, the university has expanded the scale of international students in 2025, admitting nearly three hundred students from 37 countries. On September 15th, which was the registration day for the 2025 international students, due to some furniture not yet in place at the 16th building designated for the male international students, the 30 male students who registered that day were temporarily accommodated on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors of the 6th building student apartment.”
The statement further mentioned that as of 5 pm on September 16th, the university had relocated all the male international students from the 6th building to the 16th building and expressed deep apologies for the inconvenience caused to other students.
However, many netizens were not convinced. They commented, “These jerks are too bad, blatantly arranging it themselves yet claiming it’s a rumor? And still investigating?” “I don’t believe in the ‘temporary accommodation for a day’ excuse at all.” “Even if the dormitory for international students lacked equipment, they should have been placed in male dormitories first.” “Is this causing inconvenience? This is crossing the moral bottom line.”
“Are there even furniture in the international student dormitories?” “The Dragon Descendants have arrived, and all teachers and students kneel.” “They brought in the rich black guys.” “They have filled the gap in Chongqing where there were no black admirers.”
Some netizens believed that “Significantly increasing the proportion of international students is not something that universities can decide on their own.” One netizen revealed, “Chongqing aims to build an international city and the university is striving for ‘Double First-Class’ development, and internationalization is reflected in the number of international students.”
However, others questioned this approach, saying, “Measuring the quality of university education by the number of enrolled international students?! Is higher education becoming a joke like this?”
Nevertheless, the placement of male international students into female dormitories is not an isolated incident. According to some netizens, “Female postgraduate students at Nantong University also shared the same building with international students, and when they raised the issue to the school, it was completely ignored.”
On September 17th, the related topic trended on Weibo.
