The Union Pacific Railroad Company announced on Tuesday, August 12th, that one of its trains derailed about two miles east of Gordon, Texas. According to a statement released by the company, around 2 p.m. Central Daylight Time (CDT), approximately 35 cars of a Union Pacific Railroad train went off the tracks.
The incident took place on a railroad bridge on Coalville Road, located about two miles east of Gordon in Palo Pinto County, Texas. Gordon is a small town situated approximately 71 miles west of Fort Worth.
Local officials mentioned that the train might have been carrying hazardous materials. However, there have been no reports of leaks at the site. Emergency responders have arrived at the scene to mitigate any losses and dangers and are currently working on clearing the area.
Fortunately, there were no injuries reported among those involved in the derailment, as confirmed by both the Union Pacific Railroad Company and the Palo Pinto County Emergency Services Department. The situation is considered stable, although full control has not yet been established.
The Palo Pinto County Fire Department is actively working to extinguish the grass fires that erupted at the scene, with reassurances that no buildings are currently threatened by the flames.
County officials emphasized that caution is being exercised by the fire personnel as they deal with the situation involving hazardous materials.
More rescue personnel are en route to the site, and investigations are underway to determine the cause of the accident, as stated by the Union Pacific Railroad Company.
Footage captured from the scene shows the derailed cars scattered off the tracks, with the surrounding grasslands ablaze and billowing smoke. Firefighters are diligently using water hoses to contain the fires on the ground.
