The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) stated that the Global Cooperation and Training Framework (GCTF) held its first overseas event in Australia, focusing on media resilience in the Pacific region.
In a press release, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) stated that “the Taiwan Representative Office in Australia, in cooperation with the U.S. Embassy in Australia and the Griffith Asia Institute at Griffith University in Australia, held the Global Cooperation and Training Framework workshop in Brisbane on the 5th and 6th local time.”
This is the first time in the 10-year history of the GCTF that an event has been held in Australia, with the theme “Communication in Crisis: Practical Methods and Experience Sharing in the Pacific Region” discussing how Pacific Island countries can strengthen media resilience to respond to natural disasters and public health crises.
The opening ceremony featured speeches by Taiwan’s Representative to Australia, Hsu Yu-Tien, Acting Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Australia Erika Olson, and Director of the Griffith Asia Institute, Christoph Nedopil-Wang.
The event brought together officials, scholars, media representatives, and civil society representatives from 15 countries including Australia, Canada, the Cook Islands, Fiji, Japan, New Zealand, Palau, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Tonga, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Vanuatu, totaling 52 participants. Chiu Chia-Yi, the Executive Director of the Taiwan Fact-Check Center, shared Taiwan’s experience in strengthening the credibility of the media through transparency and responsibility.
Hsu Yu-Tien emphasized the importance of transparent and real-time communication during crises, stating that Taiwan will continue to cooperate with like-minded countries to promote regional development and security.
Since its establishment in 2015, the GCTF has become an important platform for cooperation between Taiwan and partner countries, covering key areas such as public health, cybersecurity, women’s empowerment, and disaster response. Australia officially joined the GCTF in 2021, and this workshop demonstrates everyone’s commitment to enhancing a free and open media environment in the Indo-Pacific region.
