Henan Teenager Dies from Physical Punishment at an Expansion Camp, Homeroom Teacher on Trial

Last year, a 14-year-old girl from Zhongmu County, Henan, fell into a coma after being physically punished at the “Ke Zhen Expansion Camp” and died despite rescue efforts. The girl had written a letter to her parents requesting to come home, but it was intercepted by the class teacher, Yin Mouli. On June 4, Yin Mouli stood trial at the Zhongmu County Court on charges of violating freedom of communication, and the case will be decided at a later date.

In late June 2024, Mr. Wang from Tongbai County, Nanyang City, Henan, sent his rebellious and school-hating daughter to the “Ke Zhen Character Development Camp” in Langchenggang Town, Zhongmu County, hoping she would receive traditional Chinese education and psychological counseling there. However, as the summer camp was about to end, Mr. Wang received a call from Yin Mouli, the camp’s head teacher, informing him that his daughter had fainted and been taken to the hospital, urgently requiring family presence at the camp.

Upon arrival, Mr. Wang discovered multiple injuries on his daughter, suspecting the school of physical punishment, verbal abuse, and even mistreatment. He immediately reported the incident to the police, which garnered widespread media attention. Subsequently, it was reported that the company employees Wu and Jin had been taken into custody by criminal forces, and Henan Ke Zhen Expansion Services Co., Ltd. had been shut down.

Yin Mouli, the class teacher, was detained on suspicion of violating freedom of communication and later released on bail pending trial. According to the Red Star News on June 4, the case was privately heard in the Zhongmu County Court on that day.

According to the indictment by the Zhongmu County Prosecutor’s Office, during the camp, the victimized girl, Xiao Wang, due to symptoms like vomiting and chest pain, wrote a letter asking her parents to take her home for treatment. She entrusted the letter to the defendant Yin Mouli to pass on to her parents, but Yin Mouli concealed the letter against Xiao Wang’s wishes.

Mr. Wang told Red Star News that in the intercepted letter by Yin Mouli, his daughter clearly expressed her desire to go home, stating that she was ill, had injuries, wanted to see a doctor, and wished to have a nice meal outside, but it was intercepted by Yin Mouli, leading the parents to remain unaware. If they had been informed earlier and brought the child home, the tragedy could have been completely avoided.

“I think she (Yin Mouli) is an accomplice in the abuse. As the head teacher, she is the primary person responsible and should truthfully report the situation to us, but the photos and videos she sent us daily showed the child was fine,” Mr. Wang said.

After the trial, Yin Mouli admitted that intercepting Xiao Wang’s letter was indeed a mistake on her part, expressing remorse. However, she explained that she was overly compliant with the school’s regulations. “The school has rules that prohibit content like wanting to go home, asking for snacks from parents in students’ letters, so subconsciously, I did not send it out.”

Yin Mouli claimed, “I absolutely did not abuse or intentionally harm Xiao Wang.” However, testimonies from some student witnesses indicated that Yin Mouli had been involved in two incidents of bullying Xiao Wang, where she did not act physically but had other students drag Xiao Wang out of the counseling room. Moreover, the police found over a hundred letters written by students to parents during a search at Yin Mouli’s home, but she admitted to intercepting only two of Xiao Wang’s letters.

Mr. Wang believes that everything Yin Mouli is currently saying is an attempt to evade responsibility and shift blame. The family and their defense attorney have provided input to the court, stating that Yin Mouli is also suspected of abuse and should be held accountable.

According to Red Star News, the prosecution recommended a six-month sentence, but after the trial on June 4, no verdict was given, with the judge stating that the case will be decided on a later date.
