Pennsylvania Senator Dave McCormick reassured concerned Pennsylvania voters during a telephone conference at City Hall on Wednesday (April 9th) regarding President Trump’s tariff policies and government spending cuts. He vowed to closely monitor the impacts of these policies and advocate for protecting key services such as social security, medical assistance, and veteran benefits.
McCormick pointed out that President Trump’s tariff policies, especially aimed at addressing unfair trade practices by countries like China, are part of Trump’s economic plan. While these measures are still in the early stages, he emphasized the need for time to evaluate their effects. He also stressed that Trump’s tax cuts, regulatory rollbacks, and support for the energy industry will boost confidence in the economy.
Addressing the impact of stock market fluctuations on retirement plans, McCormick stated that economic growth will ultimately stabilize the stock market. He warned that if Trump’s tax cut policies are not extended, Americans may face the risk of tax increases.
In response to voters’ concerns about President Trump’s actions, McCormick stated that Congress should fulfill its duties and uphold the balance of powers in the Constitution. He also emphasized that if Trump’s actions violate executive powers, he will speak out publicly. While supporting some of Trump’s policies, McCormick remains focused on ensuring services and welfare protections, especially against the backdrop of spending cuts.
McCormick also expressed concern about the planned downsizing of veteran affairs, particularly considering the large number of veterans in Pennsylvania. He discussed this issue with officials from the Department of Veterans Affairs and plans to hold a meeting with veteran organizations to understand service quality and potential issues.
McCormick concluded by stating that he will hold regular telephone conferences at City Hall and plans to introduce legislation on congressional term limits, stating that he “absolutely” supports this measure.
Meanwhile, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, at a winery in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania a week ago, expressed that President Trump’s tariff policies have had negative impacts on consumers and many industries. He noted that tariffs have led to increased aluminum costs, indirectly raising beer prices, which he referred to as a “consumer tax,” forcing small businesses to pass on additional costs to consumers.
Shapiro mentioned that Pennsylvania has 530 breweries that contribute $5.4 billion to the state’s economy annually. However, tariffs on aluminum and steel have raised costs for breweries, particularly for steel and aluminum cans used in brewing, leading to price increases in malt barley. While Shapiro does not deny that tariffs may protect domestic American businesses, he believes these policies bring about price hikes and uncertainty, placing pressure on consumers and businesses.
Republican lawmakers support President Trump’s tariff policies, believing they can stimulate domestic production and protect American workers. However, Democrats argue that Trump’s tariff policies damage relationships with allies.
