After falling from grace for nearly half a year, Zhang Huijian, former director of Guangdong Radio and Television, has been expelled from the Communist Party and handed over to judicial authorities.
The Discipline Inspection Commission of the Communist Party of Guangdong Province announced on November 3 that, with the approval of the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee, the Commission has initiated an investigation into the serious violations of discipline and law by Zhang Huijian, former Party Secretary and director of Guangdong Radio and Television.
According to the announcement, Zhang Huijian obstructed organizational review; accepted gifts, cash gifts, and gift cards in violation of regulations, conducted irregular official receptions, used government vehicles excessively; failed to report personal matters as required, engaged in irregular selection and appointment of cadres; dereliction of duty leading to losses of state-owned assets; engaged in power-for-money transactions, leveraging his position to seek profits for others in enterprise operations, advertising contracting, and illegally accepted substantial amounts of money; failed to report significant overseas deposits.
The announcement further stated that Zhang Huijian has been expelled from the Party, had corresponding retirement benefits canceled, and has been handed over to judicial authorities.
On May 13, Zhang Huijian was officially announced to have fallen from grace, more than six years after leaving his position as director.
Public records show that Zhang Huijian is a native of Meixian District, Meizhou City, Guangdong Province, and started working at Guangdong Television in 1978.
Throughout his career, Zhang Huijian has held various positions at the station, including head of the news department, deputy director, assistant to the director, head of the news department, and deputy director. In January 2004, Zhang Huijian was appointed as the director of Guangdong Television.
In April 2014, Guangdong Radio and Television was officially established through the integration of the original South Guangdong Radio and Television Media Group, Guangdong Radio, Guangdong Television, and Southern Television. In May of the same year, Zhang Huijian was appointed as the director of Guangdong Radio and Television until he stepped down from the position on February 28, 2018.
On January 27, 2018, Zhang Huijian was appointed as the Deputy Director of the Cultural and Historical Information Committee of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, and he stepped down from the position in 2023.
