People at Home and Abroad Refuse to Forget and Stay Silent on the 6th Anniversary of Li Wenliang’s Death

On February 7th of this year marked the 6th anniversary of the passing of Dr. Li Wenliang, an ophthalmologist at the central hospital in Wuhan, who is known as the “whistleblower” of the Chinese Communist Virus (COVID-19). People from all over the world have expressed their condolences. Recently, a large number of netizens have left comments under the last two Weibo posts of Dr. Li Wenliang. This comment section has been dubbed the “Crying Wall” of the Chinese internet, with over a million messages posted.

Renowned mainland media figure Li Weiao posted on Weibo on the 7th, reminiscing about the scene six years ago when he was waiting outside the emergency room, describing Li Wenliang as “accidentally becoming a small but significant footnote in human history in those years.” This post has since been deleted.

Weibo user “Tea Enthusiast Speaks”: “Six years have passed so quickly, but we still remember you.”

Weibo user “Yu Yizhe”: “Please pause for a second to pay tribute to Dr. Li Wenliang and remember him!”

Weibo user “Finance101”: “It has been 6 years since Dr. Li Wenliang passed away. Many things only become clear in hindsight.”

On January 31, 2026, in New York’s Times Square, young members of the Chinese Democratic Party held a “Hold Accountable the Originator of the Wuhan Pandemic” event, demanding accountability for the global COVID-19 pandemic caused by the Chinese Communist Party.

Member of the Chinese Democratic Party, Long Yue, read out the party’s statement: “The death of Li Wenliang is a tragedy brought about by the long-term suppression of speech, information censorship, and punishment of truth-tellers by the CCP. At the onset of the 2019 CCP virus outbreak, the CCP regime did not choose openness, transparency, and professional responses, but instead chose to cover up, maintain stability, and propagate lies, warning and suppressing whistleblowing doctors, blocking pandemic information, concealing the truth from the people, misleading and delaying the international community, leading to the pandemic spiraling out of control and ultimately evolving into the global COVID-19 pandemic, causing the loss of tens of millions of lives, countless broken families, and massive social and economic devastation; the CCP and its dictator Xi Jinping bear an inescapable responsibility with their policy of ‘stability above lives, lies over truth’.”

The statement highlighted, “COVID-19 is not a natural disaster but a man-made catastrophe, with the root cause of this catastrophe being the CCP system. We demand an independent investigation by the international community into the origins and responsibilities of the COVID-19 pandemic, holding accountable those responsible for covering up the outbreak and suppressing the truth, seeking justice for all those who paid with their lives due to lies and suppression. Commemorating Li Wenliang is a refusal to forget, to reject lies, to refuse to remain silent once again; truth is innocent, speaking out should not lead to death, history will eventually hold those responsible to account.”

Dr. Li Wenliang was one of the first doctors to publicly report the existence of the virus during the early stages of the COVID-19 outbreak in Wuhan. In early January 2020, as an ophthalmologist at the central hospital in Wuhan, he issued early warnings about the novel virus through social media, drawing public attention. However, he was harassed by the local public security bureau and was asked to sign a reprimand letter.

On January 23, 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic could no longer be concealed, the CCP announced the lockdown of Wuhan.

Dr. Li Wenliang tragically succumbed to the virus and was confirmed deceased at 2:58 am Beijing time on February 7, 2020. His passing sparked widespread discussions globally. At that time, there was a groundswell of demand online within China to clear his name, causing panic among the CCP authorities who resorted to widespread censorship and arrests to suppress dissent.

The documentary “Wuhan Lockdown” premiered worldwide on December 30, 2023, documenting the 101 days of the Wuhan epidemic from its early stages to the lifting of the lockdown, depicting the state of public opinion and censorship at that time and shedding light on China’s freedom of speech and human rights issues. The film was planned by activist Wang Dan and produced collaboratively by a group of volunteers who contributed funds, aiming to show the true face of the Wuhan lockdown period to a global audience.
