Can you get seasick? Cruise experts teach you how to choose the right cabin.

Like booking a seat on a plane, people also need to reserve cabins when boarding a cruise ship, and they can choose according to their preferences. For those who easily get seasick, experts have shared tips on selecting the right cabin to avoid seasickness, which is worth a try.

According to a report by the British newspaper “Daily Express,” Will Sarson, the Product Manager and Cruise Expert of the English cruise company Riviera Travel, said that choosing the wrong cabin is the most common mistake made by first-time cruise passengers.

Sarson said, “Planning your first cruise holiday is indeed exciting, but there are many things to consider to ensure you are adequately prepared. From timing to overpacking, we often see inexperienced cruise passengers making the same mistakes.”

For those prone to seasickness, Sarson recommends staying in cabins that are less prone to motion, and these cabin locations may be unknown to many.

He said, “Many inexperienced cruise passengers may not be aware that the location of cabins on board can have a significant impact on seasickness. For passengers who are particularly prone to discomfort at sea, it is best to book cabins located in the central part of the ship to minimize the rocking sensation.”

Similarly, if you desire a peaceful experience in your cabin, Sarson advises paying attention to the location of the cabin. Although most cruise companies strive to ensure that cabins are soundproof to avoid being affected by onboard activities, some cabins may be noisier than others.

He said, “If you seek a quiet journey, I recommend choosing cabins that are far away from facilities like bars.”

Previously reported by Dajiyuan, cruise ship cabins are generally categorized into four types: Interior Cabin, Oceanview Cabin, Balcony Cabin, and Suite Cabin, in addition to some special cabins.

Among these cabins, Interior Cabins are the most economical but they lack windows, are dark inside, usually smaller, and may make some passengers feel claustrophobic. If passengers are prone to seasickness, staying in an interior cabin where they cannot see the horizon may worsen their condition.

If you are planning a cruise vacation, choosing non-peak times can be more cost-effective, such as Black Friday or January. This is because most cruise companies offer promotions like free upgrades on these days, which can help you save some money.

Additionally, Sarson also mentioned another common mistake made by inexperienced cruise passengers, which is packing too much in their luggage.

Sarson said, “I often see the biggest mistake people make on their first cruise is bringing too much stuff, mainly clothes. Some cruise voyages can last for weeks, so it’s easy to understand why some people tend to overpack.”

He said, “Although bringing essentials is crucial, I suggest not packing your entire wardrobe. Instead, just bring your favorite holiday outfits and utilize the onboard facilities.”

He added that many cruises offer a range of facilities or services for passengers, such as laundry services. Leaving enough space in your suitcase can be used to store items you purchase at the ports you visit.

Just like airlines, cruise companies also have luggage restriction policies. The amount and weight of luggage passengers can bring on board depend on the cruise company’s regulations.
