New York City Police Department on High Alert to Ensure Safety on New Year’s Eve at Times Square

As the arrival of 2025 approaches, millions of citizens are expected to participate in the New Year’s Eve celebration at Times Square in New York City. The city’s police department stated on December 30th that there are currently no specific credible threats, but they will enhance security measures to ensure that people at the event can welcome the new year safely and joyfully.

The traditional New Year’s Eve celebration at Times Square will mark its 120th edition, coinciding with the 400th anniversary of the founding of New York City in 2025. It is estimated that over a million people and tourists will flock to the square to join the festivities.

In order to ensure the safety of approximately one million participants, Mayor Adams led city officials in a news conference on December 30th to announce the security measures in place. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch mentioned that the police department remains highly vigilant, deploying a significant number of officers throughout the region and the city. Elite members of the department, such as the Emergency Service Unit, will be strategically positioned on building rooftops in the area, bomb-sniffing K-9 units will patrol, and the aviation unit will monitor the event and surrounding areas from the sky, paying special attention to bridges and other landmarks.

Deputy Police Commissioner Kaz Daughtry stated that this year, the drone patrol team will increase to six units, with four in the central area and two in the outskirts. Additional drone teams will operate in Manhattan and other locations, monitoring water surfaces as well.

The weather forecast for the night of December 31st predicts possible rain. Tisch reminded attendees of the New Year’s Eve event that the police department will begin a phased street closure around the area starting from 4 am on December 31st, with subsequent closures at 7 am and 11 am. Certain subway stations, including the 49th Street station on the N/Q/R lines and the 50th Street station northbound on the 1 line, will be bypassed, while other stations will maintain normal operation.

The viewing area for the event will officially open at 3 pm, with pedestrians being able to enter from 49th, 52nd, and 56th Streets at Sixth Avenue and Eighth Avenue in Manhattan.

Authorities advise citizens to use public transportation as much as possible due to the security measures in place during the New Year’s Eve event. Prohibited items include backpacks, large bags, beverage coolers, alcoholic beverages, chairs, and umbrellas.

Just last week, a suspected terrorist attack involving a car plowing into the Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany, resulted in 5 deaths and over 200 injuries. When asked during the news conference if additional security measures will be taken at Times Square, Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism Rebecca Weiner stated that measures such as sand trucks, barrier vehicles, and other preventive measures against vehicle attacks have been implemented. She expressed great confidence that all attendees will have a safe and enjoyable New Year’s Eve. Weiner also responded to a question regarding the escalating threats posed by the Venezuelan gang “Tren de Aragua” and clarified that there are no specific threats related to this gang at the Times Square New Year’s Eve event.
