On Saturday, a shooting incident took place in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, as reported by President Zelensky, where at least five people died and numerous others were injured. The authorities have successfully neutralized the gunman.
According to Kyiv police, the shooting occurred in the southern part of the capital in the Holosiivskyi district. A man initially opened fire on a crowd on the street and subsequently took hostages in a nearby supermarket.
Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko stated that the assailant fired at police inside the supermarket before being taken down by law enforcement. Prior to this, negotiators attempted to establish communication with him.
The exact number of casualties is still unclear, but the Mayor of Kyiv reported at least 15 injuries, with 10 individuals (including a child) already transported to the hospital.
President Zelensky took to the social media platform X, posting, “Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko just reported that the attacker who opened fire on civilians in Kyiv has been eliminated. The full details on this incident are still under investigation.”
Zelensky also mentioned that the gunman had taken some hostages during the incident, with four of them successfully rescued.
“We anticipate a swift investigation. Ukrainian National Police and Security Service investigators are working tirelessly,” Zelensky added.
Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko confirmed that the shooter has been identified as a 58-year-old man from Moscow, with the suspect’s registered residence in Kyiv experiencing a fire.
Kravchenko further stated that in this incident, four individuals lost their lives on the street, while one died inside the supermarket, where the suspect brandished automatic weapons.
