New York City Mayor’s Legal Troubles Affecting Polls, Nearly Seventy Percent of New Yorkers Believe He Should Resign

A recent poll conducted by the Marist College’s polling organization revealed that nearly seventy percent of New Yorkers believe that the federally indicted New York City Mayor Eric Adams should resign from his position. If Adams does not step down, almost two-thirds of New Yorkers think that New York Governor Kathy Hochul should initiate impeachment proceedings against Adams.

The Marist Poll showed that 69% of New York City residents, including 71% of Democrats, believe that Adams should resign as mayor, while 30% of the public think he should complete his remaining term.

According to the poll, if Adams does not resign, 63% of New Yorkers believe that Governor Hochul should begin the process of impeaching Adams. Additionally, 36% of respondents believe that Hochul should not impeach Adams.

Dr. Lee Miringoff, the director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion, stated, “It’s hard to imagine Mayor Adams performing worse on the court of public opinion.”

Miringoff added, “New York City residents not only think that he (Adams) has done something illegal, but they also believe he should resign, or let Governor Hochul initiate the process to remove him from office.”

The survey showed that 65% of New York City residents, including 68% of Democrats, believe that Adams has done something illegal. Furthermore, 24% of people think that Adams has done something unethical but not illegal, while only 8% believe that Adams has done nothing wrong.

The poll indicated that 72% of New York City residents have heard a lot or some news about the federal indictment of Mayor Adams, while 28% have heard little or no information about the charges.

However, regardless of the level of awareness, the poll indicated that New Yorkers’ approval of Adams as mayor is not high.

The Marist College poll stated, “Only 26% of people approve of the job he is doing, while 74% do not approve. Adams’ approval rating has dropped from 37% in November 2023.”

Furthermore, the survey noted that 81% of New York City residents, including 80% of Democrats, believe that Adams should not run for mayor in 2025 – a sentiment similar to that towards former Governor Andrew Cuomo.

The poll indicated that 55% of New York City adults do not want former Governor Cuomo to run for mayor, but 44% of the public think that Cuomo should run. There is a tug-of-war within the Democratic Party, with 52% of Democrats believing that Cuomo should not run, while 48% hold the opposite view.

This poll was conducted by the Marist College Polling Institute from September 30 to October 1, interviewing 1,073 New York City residents aged 18 and older.
