Chinese Tourist Dies as Vehicle Overturns on the Ice of Russia’s Lake Baikal

On January 28th, near Olkhon Island on Lake Baikal in Russia, a vehicle carrying tourists overturned on the ice. The accident occurred when the vehicle was traversing the icy surface, resulting in the death of one Chinese tourist and injuries to four others.

According to reports from the Russian news agency Sputnik, the incident took place on the ice near Olkhon Island in Lake Baikal. The vehicle lost control while driving and collided with a crack in the ice, causing it to overturn. At the time of the accident, there were a total of 10 tourists on board, and a 75-year-old female Chinese tourist succumbed to her injuries on the scene.

Following the accident, the Russian Investigative Committee has opened a case in accordance with the law to investigate and determine the specific circumstances and causes of the incident. Investigators are currently conducting on-site inspections, technical assessments, and gathering relevant evidence.

The Chinese Consulate General in Irkutsk has confirmed that the victim of the accident was a Chinese tourist, with four other Chinese tourists sustaining minor injuries.

Currently, the injured individuals have been transferred to the central hospital in the Olkhon region for medical treatment.

Russian law enforcement authorities reported that the vehicle involved was providing private transportation services for a tour group. In accordance with relevant provisions of the Russian Criminal Code regarding “providing services that do not meet safety requirements and resulting in death due to negligence,” the authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident.

According to TASS news agency, the overturning incident occurred on the ice near Olkhon Island on Lake Baikal, and the Russian Investigative Committee has opened an investigation into the accident.
