Two Major Landslides Block Traffic Artery Twice in Guangxi, Vehicles Trapped

Recently, there have been two sudden mountain landslides on the Six Point Mountain Tunnel section of the G7211 Nan You Expressway in Chongzuo, Guangxi. The landslides occurred at the entrance of the tunnel in the direction from Pingxiang to Nanning, with mud and debris cascading down and blocking the tunnel entrance. Just before the landslides, some vehicles had just entered the tunnel, and there was still a person near the tunnel entrance, leading to the blockade of both lanes. Nan You Expressway is an important transportation artery in mainland China.

On October 8th, several netizens posted videos showing a mountain landslide at K225+600 (exit of the Six Point Mountain Tunnel) on the G7211 Nan You Expressway in Guangxi. This resulted in vehicles being trapped inside the tunnel. The videos showed a large truck with hazard lights on at the tunnel exit as mud mixed with rocks poured down from the top of the tunnel, blocking the exit.

According to a report by the Xiaoxiang Morning News on October 9th, confirmation from a video uploader known as “Brother Ou” indicated that the footage captured was indeed at the exit of the Six Point Mountain Tunnel.

On the afternoon of October 8th, the Traffic Police Brigade of Pingxiang City Public Security Bureau in Guangxi issued a statement stating that at 16:09 on October 8th, another mountain landslide occurred at K225+600 (exit of the Six Point Mountain Tunnel) on the G7211 Nan You Expressway, resulting in the closure of both lanes.

On the night of October 4th at 9:40 pm, a mountain landslide occurred at the entrance of the Six Point Mountain Tunnel, causing vehicles in both directions to be stranded. Surveillance footage captured the intense moment when mud and rocks cascaded down like a torrential flood from the mountain, completely burying the two tunnel exits where vehicles were passing through. There were still vehicles heading towards the tunnel and pedestrians near the tunnel entrance at the time of the disaster.

According to customer service personnel from the Chongzuo Expressway Operation Co., Ltd. of Guangxi Transport Investment Group, the estimated volume of the collapsed section on site reached 5,000 cubic meters, leading to a complete traffic closure on the Nan You Expressway. A large number of vehicles were stranded, forming a line that stretched for 1.7 kilometers. Many passengers were forced to stay overnight on the expressway, awaiting rescue and evacuation.

The Nan You Expressway, where the mountain landslide occurred, is not just an ordinary transportation route. Serving as a feeder road for China’s national expressway G72, Nan You Expressway directly connects the Pearl River Delta with ASEAN countries.

Pingxiang City under the administration of Chongzuo is not only a vital hub for Sino-Vietnamese trade but also one of China’s most convenient land routes to ASEAN.

Guangxi has recently been hit by consecutive heavy rains, with the Nan You Expressway tunnel entrance experiencing large-scale mountain landslides twice, and the Guangkun Expressway suffering from road cracking and sinking due to the influence of typhoons, both incidents leading to major traffic artery disruptions.
