Tennessee State University Return-to-Campus Event: 1 Dead, 9 Injured in Off-Campus Shooting.

On Saturday, October 12, during a homecoming celebration event at Tennessee State University in the United States, a shooting incident occurred on a street adjacent to the campus, resulting in one fatality and nine injuries.

According to Don Aaron, the Public Affairs Officer of the Nashville Police Department, the incident took place at 5 p.m. when two groups engaged in gunfire, leading to one death and nine individuals sustaining gunshot wounds. It is possible that innocent bystanders were also injured. The injured were swiftly transported to hospitals by ambulances and private vehicles, where one person, only 24 years old, succumbed to their injuries.

Among the nine injured individuals, three are minors aged between 12 and 14, all currently receiving treatment at local hospitals with stable conditions and no immediate life-threatening risks. The range of injuries varies from minor to critical, with some sustaining only minor scratches.

Authorities mentioned that some of the injured persons who are hospitalized may have been involved in the shooting incident and are suspected to have participated in the exchange of gunfire. At the scene, a firearm was discovered, confirmed to be the weapon used by the suspect during the shooting.

Due to the police and fire department personnel present to ensure security during the homecoming event, law enforcement and emergency responders promptly arrived at the scene of the shooting and administered first aid, including using tourniquets to control bleeding for those injured.

The incident occurred at the intersection of 26th Street and Jefferson Street, near the House of Legends and the Jefferson Street Missionary Baptist Church, just a few blocks away from Tennessee State University.

Commander Anthony McClain of North Nashville stated that the shooting took place two hours after the start of the university’s homecoming festivities, noting that “these individuals disrupted the entire event and impacted everyone.” The majority of attendees at the homecoming celebration had gathered at the sports stadium for a football game. During the day, many had come together for parade activities.

Police have released information about two suspects being sought. Both are African American males, with one wearing a green top and pants, and the other donning a black and white top with jeans, possibly fleeing the scene in a Ford Fusion sedan.

Tennessee State University issued a statement on Saturday night clarifying that the shooting incident was unrelated to the school’s activities and did not occur on campus.
