On Tuesday, July 30th, a train bound for Mumbai in India derailed in Jharkhand, causing 2 deaths and injuring 20 people.
According to reports from Indian media, the accident occurred around 3:45 am local time on Tuesday. The Howara-CSMT Express train derailed near Badabamboo, about 80 kilometers from Jamshedpur. Officials stated that rescue teams rushed to the scene upon receiving notification of the derailment, and rescue operations are currently underway. The exact cause of the derailment is under investigation.
Kuldeep Chaudhary, the Deputy Commissioner of West Singhbhum district in Jharkhand, told India’s largest news agency PTI that 18 coaches derailed, with 16 of them being passenger coaches. This incident resulted in 2 fatalities and 20 injuries.
Officials mentioned that the railway medical team provided emergency treatment to the injured, and added that they have been transported to Chakradharpur for further medical care.
Following the accident, several trains on this route have been either canceled or rerouted.
India has witnessed multiple train accidents since last year. In June of this year, a collision occurred between a freight train and a stationary passenger train in West Bengal, India, resulting in at least 8 deaths and dozens of injuries.
A year ago, the state of Odisha witnessed one of the most severe railway accidents in India’s history in over 20 years, caused by a signal failure, leading to approximately 288 fatalities.
