How to make orchids bloom all year round?

Orchids are known for their noble elegance, pleasing the eyes of those who behold them. Imagine being able to enjoy these beautiful flowers all year round – what a wonderful thought!
Experts say that with proper care, orchids can bloom throughout the year with a simple method that allows them to bloom repeatedly.

According to a report by the British newspaper “Daily Express”, Plantsman Graham Rice, a gardening expert from the Royal Horticultural Society in the UK, believes that orchids are worth caring for in order to ensure they bloom for several years.

Rice explained that there is a simple trick to encourage orchids to bloom more than once, and anyone at home can try it without the need for special materials.

Firstly, it’s important to know which types of orchids are capable of blooming repeatedly. The most likely candidates for repeat blooming are Phalaenopsis orchids, also known as moth orchids. These orchids are known for their ease of reblooming and are commonly available in supermarkets and garden centers. They come in various colors and patterns, appealing to different tastes.

Another type of orchid that is more likely to rebloom is the Paphiopedilum, also known as slipper orchids. Each stem of this orchid only produces one flower, but the flowering period can last up to 5 months.

Additionally, the Miltonia orchid is another type that can potentially rebloom throughout the year.

Rice explained that the key to prompting orchids to rebloom is to ensure that the temperature in the room where they are planted is lower at night than during the day, typically a difference of around 5 degrees Celsius. This temperature differential often triggers orchids to rebloom.

In order to achieve this temperature difference, simply moving the orchids to a cooler room at night may be all that is needed. For most orchids grown at home, this small adjustment can make a significant difference.

Rice mentioned that orchids like Phalaenopsis and Paphiopedilum can happily bloom for 2 to 3 months with this method.

Although orchids may require a few months of rest after blooming, they have the ability to rebloom throughout the year. The opportunity to enjoy the beauty of orchid flowers for most of the year would indeed be a wonderful experience.

Previously, Canadian gardening expert and social media influencer Frankie Ferragine shared a simple and cost-free method to ensure orchids rebloom. He advised cutting the flowered stems above the nodes to stimulate further growth and blooming of the orchids.
