The United States and the Five Eyes intelligence partners issued a rare joint warning on Wednesday, June 4th, alerting that the Chinese Communist Party was using LinkedIn and other professional recruitment platforms to contact and recruit Western government, military, and intelligence personnel who can obtain sensitive information.
According to reports from the Associated Press, the FBI in the United States, MI5 in the United Kingdom, as well as relevant intelligence agencies in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, collectively issued a statement warning that the Chinese military intelligence department is intensifying its efforts to recruit personnel from Five Eyes alliance member countries.
The statement highlighted that Chinese agents are increasingly using professional social networking sites and recruitment platforms to target individuals with security clearances and access to classified information, particularly focusing on those in the diplomatic, security, intelligence sectors, and military personnel stationed in the Asia-Pacific region.
The Five Eyes alliance stated that Chinese intelligence officers often disguise themselves as employees of private consulting firms, think tanks, or human resources companies, posting recruitment advertisements online to connect with individuals in defense, diplomatic, and security analysis fields.
The statement mentioned that some contacted individuals are asked to write so-called “research reports,” with compensations ranging from hundreds to thousands of dollars, sometimes even paid in cryptocurrency. These seemingly ordinary research tasks could ultimately be exploited by Chinese security agencies to obtain sensitive or undisclosed information.
The statement also warned that military personnel may be asked to provide information about their units, base locations, and military activities. Individuals involved in cases that have been uncovered have faced criminal charges, lost their jobs, and had their security clearances revoked.
Security officials indicated that China has been using artificial intelligence (AI) technology in recent years to generate a large number of fake personal profiles and recruitment information, making identification more difficult.
Furthermore, last October, MI5 warned British parliamentarians that they were facing threats of phishing and espionage activities from China, Russia, and Iran.
Last month, two individuals suspected of engaging in espionage activities for China became the first to be convicted under the new UK National Security Law. This includes a British Border Force officer and a Hong Kong trade official.
Additionally, Ken McCallum, the Director General of MI5, recently issued another warning, stating that China has long been using platforms like LinkedIn to contact individuals related to Western governments and security systems.
In their latest statement, the Five Eyes alliance emphasized that the ultimate goal of the Chinese intelligence department is to obtain military, political, and economic intelligence, in order to gain strategic and tactical advantages.
The joint release of the warning by the Five Eyes alliance demonstrates that Western intelligence agencies are maintaining a high level of vigilance against Chinese espionage activities.
