Recently, surveillance devices were found in the women’s restroom of the Zhiyuan Pavilion (self-study building) at Shanghai University of Political Science and Law, raising concerns about the management of public spaces in universities.
On May 28th, several netizens posted on social media claiming that surveillance devices were discovered in the women’s restroom at Shanghai University of Political Science and Law. According to the posts, on the 28th, a student found a hidden surveillance device disguised in a black square box in the women’s restroom of the self-study building at the university.
It was reported by The Paper that some students had previously seen other suspicious cameras in the area.
Several netizens stated that after investigation, it was found that a male graduate student of the university had installed the devices. Many netizens shared what appeared to be the student’s ID number and phone number.
The report mentioned that on the morning of May 29th, multiple calls were made to the school office but no one answered. Several staff members from the school’s network information office and graduate office expressed that they were unaware of the situation and didn’t have the contact numbers of the relevant departments. Calls to the phone number shared by the netizens were disconnected, and no response was received to inquiry messages sent.
A Weibo user with an IP address in Shanghai, known as “It’s raining now, I just need to open my umbrella,” posted saying, “Around this time last year, a prospective party member in our school (Shanghai University of Political Science and Law) mistakenly shared upskirt photos of female students riding bicycles in the party branch group chat, which was immediately retracted. The incident continued to escalate within our school, but eventually, the school suppressed it, and this person even passed the civil service exam. This year, a similar incident involving women has occurred again. With seventy percent of our school’s population being female, such incidents have occurred repeatedly. The normal privacy rights of female students at our school have been seriously threatened, yet the school has not made any response. We just want security assurance!”
Numerous netizens commented expressing disbelief at such incidents happening at a prestigious institution like the School of Political Science and Law.
After the public outcry, the school released a situation report, stating that a special working group has been established, and an investigation has been launched in collaboration with the public security authorities.
