One hippopotamus battles five lionesses: Who will win?

In recent news from Kruger National Park in South Africa, a thrilling encounter unfolded between a hippopotamus and five lionesses. Who would emerge victorious in this battle of strength and survival? Would the hippopotamus end up as a meal for the lionesses?

According to reports from the “Latest Sightings” website on July 31, a regular visitor to the park, Barry Smith, captured footage of the hippopotamus facing off against the group of lionesses and shared it on the website.

Smith mentioned that he visits the park three times a year, and this particular visit was accompanied by his friend Bruce, who is also a wildlife enthusiast. Both of them share a love for the park, but like many visitors, they had never witnessed such a significant event before. Witnessing the hippopotamus standing its ground against the lionesses came as a surprise to them.

On that day, Smith and Bruce encountered the group of lionesses on the riverbed. It was their third time seeing lions during their visits. Suddenly, a hippopotamus appeared, adding an unexpected twist to the scene.

In the wild, hunting and taking down an adult hippopotamus is a formidable challenge for predators, even for lionesses. However, the wilderness is unpredictable, and lions must adapt to the circumstances.

At first, the hippopotamus managed to intimidate a few of the lionesses, causing them to retreat briefly. As it approached the lionesses, they began to surround it, forcing the hippopotamus to circle and run in a state of panic. When the hippopotamus realized it was at a disadvantage, its desperation became evident as it opened its mouth and circled in an attempt to fend off the lionesses.

The lionesses remained calm and strategic, taking advantage of the hippopotamus’s growing panic. Eventually, the hippopotamus struggled to keep up with the lionesses’ movements. One lioness approached it, leaped on top of it, and overwhelmed it.

Unable to withstand the lionesses’ attack, the hippopotamus luckily had a river just a few meters away. It managed to escape, learning some valuable lessons from the encounter.

Smith expressed his disbelief at witnessing the dramatic scene unfold before his eyes. Other onlookers passing by in their vehicles also shook their heads in amazement.

This was the first time Smith predicted that the lionesses would attempt to take down the hippopotamus. While technically not a hunting event, he was excited to witness such a rare and intense interaction in the wild.

Previously reported by the Epoch Times, hippopotamuses are known for their aggressive nature and formidable strength, even making lions wary of crossing them. There was an incident where a lioness tried to approach a sleeping hippopotamus, lightly touching its hindquarters with her nose multiple times, possibly sensing its scent. However, the hippopotamus woke up and fiercely bit the lioness on the head.

Overall, the encounter between the hippopotamus and the lionesses in Kruger National Park provided a captivating glimpse into the unpredictable and dynamic interactions of wildlife in their natural habitats.
