Former Secretary-General of Anhui Provincial People’s Congress Bai Jinming Accused of Taking Bribes Exceeding 277 Million Yuan in First Instance.

Another Chinese official accused of corruption has surfaced. On Friday, Anhui Province’s former Secretary-General of the People’s Congress, Bai Jinming, faced trial for bribery, with allegations of receiving over 277 million yuan. Bai Jinming had previously served as the Secretary-General of the Anhui Provincial Government.

July 5th saw the opening of the first trial in Anhui’s Hefei Intermediate People’s Court regarding Bai Jinming, former member of the Standing Committee of the Anhui Provincial People’s Congress and Secretary-General, on suspicion of bribery.

According to the indictment by the Hefei Prosecutor’s Office, Bai Jinming allegedly took advantage of his positions as Deputy Director and Director of the Department of Science and Education of the Ministry of Agriculture, Inspector, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, Acting Mayor, and Mayor of Bengbu City, Director of the Human Resources and Social Security Department of Anhui Province, Secretary-General of the Anhui Provincial Government, and Secretary-General of the Standing Committee of the Anhui Provincial People’s Congress from 2002 to 2023, soliciting or accepting bribes totaling over 277 million yuan.

Bai Jinming was officially implicated on July 19 last year, just a day after attending a meeting. In mid-January this year, he was subjected to party disciplinary measures and transferred to judicial authorities for further investigation.

According to preliminary statistics by Wang Youqun, a columnist for Dajiyuan, from January to June this year, 16 corrupt officials with assets exceeding one billion yuan have been sentenced by Chinese Communist Party courts, with a total confirmed bribe amount of 4.997 billion yuan.
