On November 28, 2025, a devastating five-alarm fire broke out in the Grand Fountain Estate in Tai Po, Hong Kong, resulting in at least 94 confirmed fatalities, shocking the international community. Singer Kwan Siu Man’s mother is from Hong Kong, and her grandmother’s home was located in the Grand Fountain Estate. Witnessing her childhood memories being engulfed by the flames left her feeling utterly powerless.
The Grand Fountain Estate in the New Territories of Hong Kong consists of eight residential towers, with seven of them engulfed in the five-alarm fire on the 26th. The blaze raged on for over 24 hours, leaving a trail of destruction. Hong Kong authorities confirmed on November 28 that the death toll has risen to 94, including a 37-year-old firefighter.
The fire has nearly been extinguished, and rescue teams are combing through the charred high-rise buildings in search of over a hundred missing individuals. It is anticipated that the fire department will conduct controlled demolitions of all residential units within the seven affected towers to ensure no one is trapped inside.
This fire marks the deadliest blaze in Hong Kong in nearly 80 years. Several residents of the Grand Fountain Estate told AFP that they did not hear any fire alarms when the fire broke out, forcing them to go door-to-door to alert their neighbors to evacuate.
Singer Kwan Siu Man, deeply affected by the tragedy in her family’s community, expressed her despair on social media on the 27th, stating, “Feeling so powerless, I can only watch helplessly as the home filled with memories of my grandmother burns in the raging fire.” She offered her condolences to all the victims and sent warm wishes to those who lost their homes.
Due to the severity of the disaster, the organizers of the “2025 MAMA Awards,” making a comeback in Hong Kong after seven years, made an emergency announcement canceling the red carpet event. The awards ceremony will proceed as planned with a global live broadcast, incorporating a solemn moment of silence to honor the victims of the fire.
In addition, Taiwanese band “Mr. Deer,” scheduled to hold a concert in Hong Kong this Saturday, has also announced its postponement, stating, “We are heartbroken but have made the most heartbreaking decision.”
