The United Chinese Association of New York held a fundraising and campaign rally for Phil Wong, who is running for City Council in the 30th District, in Brooklyn on August 15th.
President Chen Jihua stated that Phil Wong is a pragmatic individual who has deep roots in the community, advocating for the Chinese community and upholding their legitimate rights for many years. Wong has a track record of sincerity and diligence in his work, and it is crucial for the Chinese community to come together to support his candidacy for the City Council.
Chen Huihua, the founding president of the New York Cross-Strait Association, pointed out that over the past decade, the Chinese community has been involved in numerous struggles to defend their legitimate rights, with Phil Wong at the forefront. Without his efforts, many initiatives would not have succeeded, such as opposing the homeless shelter in Elmherst community and preserving the Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT). Chen called on everyone to contribute financially and physically to support Wong.
Phil Wong, who won the Democratic primary, announced his plans to prepare for the general election in November, including fundraising and campaigning. Winning the Democratic primary in a district where Asians represent only 20% of the population (with Chinese accounting for 15%) is a significant achievement, especially since he won all communities except Ridgewood.
Wong shared his background, noting that he immigrated from Hong Kong to the United States at the age of 8 in 1974. His grandfather insisted on him speaking Chinese at home, which helped him retain the language. He emphasized the importance of Chinese education for children and preserving Chinese values.
Regarding his platform, Wong expressed his support for law enforcement, enhancing education in New York City to provide better schools for the Chinese community, and opposing the current policy of treating homeless shelters as businesses. He believes that being in the City Council rather than merely protesting outside can bring more reasonable changes to New York City.
Several community members voiced their support for Phil Wong, and the general election is scheduled for November 4th. Campaign manager Zhou Guodong urged everyone to encourage their friends and family in the 30th District to vote for Phil Wong.
