Taiwan Signs MoU on Education Cooperation with Maine and Connecticut in the United States

The Ministry of Education of the Republic of China (Taiwan) announced that its Education Office in Boston and Education Office in New York had successfully completed the signing of memorandums of understanding on educational cooperation with the education departments of the states of Maine and Connecticut.

The memorandum of understanding on educational cooperation between the Ministry of Education of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the Department of Education of Connecticut was pre-signed by Ms. Li Yu-Chuan, Director of the International and Cross-Strait Education Division of the Ministry of Education, and later officially signed on January 28 at the Connecticut State Capitol. The signing ceremony was attended by Governor Ned Lamont of Connecticut, Ambassador Li Chih-Chiang of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York, and was completed by Charlene M. Russell-Tucker, Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Education, on behalf of the state, with a duration of 3 years.

This signing marks the first time that the Ministry of Education of the Republic of China (Taiwan) has signed an educational cooperation memorandum with the state of Connecticut, and carries significant symbolic meaning for enhancing mutual understanding and realizing common interests. The cooperation projects include promoting joint research projects for bilateral education personnel, encouraging exchanges between educators and institutions, fostering collaboration in language education and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education fields, as well as mutual agreement under the framework of the “Taiwan-U.S. Education Initiative” to strengthen bilateral cooperation by expanding opportunities for the exchange of Chinese and English teachers and resources.

Additionally, the Ministry of Education of the Republic of China (Taiwan) signed a memorandum of understanding on educational cooperation with the Department of Education of Maine, with Ms. Li Yu-Chuan, Director of the International and Cross-Strait Education Division of the Ministry of Education, and Commissioner Pender Makin of the Maine Department of Education representing their respective sides. The renewal and signing process was assisted by the local office on January 22, aiming to support teaching and understanding of their respective languages and cultures, deepen mutual understanding of each other’s education systems, provide information on learning Mandarin Chinese, and promote integrated learning in various fields including science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

The Ministry of Education of the Republic of China (Taiwan) stated that this renewal agreement with the Maine Department of Education marks the fifth consecutive renewal since the signing of the educational cooperation memorandum began in 2009, and for the first time, the original 3-year duration has been extended to 5 years, demonstrating the willingness and determination of both sides to continue expanding cooperation.

Following the signing with the states of Maine and Connecticut, the Ministry of Education of the Republic of China (Taiwan) has now signed 28 memorandums of understanding on educational cooperation with a total of 25 states in the United States. Building upon the “Taiwan-U.S. Education Initiative” and its 3-year strategic plan, the Ministry will continue to collaborate with relevant departments, local governments, domestic universities, primary and secondary schools, and academic institutions to actively promote various bilateral educational exchange and cooperation projects.
